Going off tonight alone......not looking good.
All the time Spain, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Argentina and France exist..... No.
Those countries opt out. Then maybe.
I'd say the generation of kids born in like 2002/2005 might win it.. aren't they the ones being taught in a whole new footballing system?
No chance. We need wholesale changes from the very bottom of grass roots, all the way to the top of the game before we start producing sides who could genuinely challenge.
Then again, Greece did fluke the Euro's.
Honestly no i dont the EPL has killed Englands chances of that, you just need to look at the talent or should i say what talent coming through....why is this because youth dont get a chance to many players outside England play in the EPL.
so no i dont see you winning anything unless things change
As the years go by i don't see english football evolving at international level, the same old coaches with the same boring tactics, we are being left behind, it will take a grass roots level shakedown but that won't happen because the premier league won't allow that to happen as it is so dependant on foreign stars for clubs to survive, it's a catch 22 situation which i don't see any way out of, the youth simply isn't getting a chance.
All the countries on the british isles need to start teaching youngsters how to play from a young age. Technical ability of so many of them is dreadful.
Seriously England have the individual quality, but not the team work ethic like Spain/Germans/Italians. Even Fabio Capello couldn't get them to play which suggests problem is deep. It could be due to not having experience playing abroad. All English players play in PL as opposed to other nations.
Yes. Might be a while yet, but yes. I don't really think it is the time to talk about it though, after a meaningless end of season friendly where the other team sat so deep.
Whoever appointed Woy is a nob.
melton, can i ask what you base your prediction on?
The problem is the players that are picked, as well as the grass roots levels, and the fact players don't leave to go abroad.
Really England should have hired Arry. He's the only English manager who could possibly get something out of this group of players.
50p no we don't have the individual talent. We have massively overrated players with the occasional genuinely good one. Even the "golden generation" weren't that great compared to the other top nations.
I actually think there also needs to be a change in the English attitude, I mean including parents stopping kids watching so much TV etc... on a more speculative note our terrible weather doesn't exactly encourage tonnes of time outside playing football or doing any sport.
speaking of international teams though.. what's happened to Belgium?? they've suddenly got a dream team! All they need is a decent manager and I think they'd be quite the outfit
At least Harry would encourage more positive football, and hopefully not pick Welbeck etc.
Will England Win A Major Tournament Again?
Under Hodgson
you must be joking.
Is it St George's Park that they built? I know the England players use it obv, but do the kids? It's all good having these top notch facilities , but if the coaching is wrong then you're not going to get anywhere.
Harry is a good manager. He'd get the lads wanting to play good football and I'd say if he'd been hired instead of Woy, England would have been looking good as dark horses in Brazil.
Still can't wrap my head around why they went for Woy.
Doubt it.
Doesn't help that the players are all on a different wavelength.
Kagooney,
Law of averages, to be honest, international football always tends to be cyclical. 12 years ago, everyone copied the french model at clairefontaine, then it was spain, now Germany even though they haven't actually won anything yet. Our time will come again eventually, I personally think part of the problem is the weight of expectation we put on ourselves, both in terms of performances and results.
Considering the size of the country we are and the amount of players we have, I think we do par for the course. We are ranked in the top eight in the world. Our performances at the WCs over the past 20 years reflect that position. We have not under or overachieved. At some point though, we will have another situation where everything clicks into place like it has for those countries.
Although I'm from N Ireland, I'm not 'anti-English' like some others from the UK can be. To be honest, perhaps apart from the Euro'96 team, I've never looked at England and thought 'yeah, they have a great team and have a genuine chance of winning something'. That's just the harsh truth - there have been some great players, but not that many great team performances - I think it's because English players are still about power and pace, rather than truely great technical ability, and inadequacies will always get found out at the top level. Because of the coverage of the EPL, much will always be expected of the England football team, if not realistic.
I agree that it has to start from grassroots, where greater technical skiils need to be taught, and until more and more English players go abroad, this will hold them back also. I can understand the top clubs having quite a few top foreigners, but surely the clubs lower down should be full of younger English talent, rather than a bunch of mediocre foreign players. I'm sure most other countries lesser teams have more home grown talent playing in them than the English ones.
It would probably help if academies would stop releasing players because they're too small or weak as opposed to basing them on their actual footballing ability.
Also i don't think our FA prioritises our national team like other nation's do, they have their shiny new wembley for wining and dining and the premier league to keep them happy, when germany hit rock bottom (1-5 munich) they embarked on a nationwide youth policy that is starting to reap dividends now, england don't do long term
