He definitely deserves a knigthood IMO

posted on 8/7/13

He may well get one although perhaps not for while. Frankly I think that knighthood's for sport are questionable, especially when they're given purely for sporting achievement. For me there has to be something more, such as engaging with the wider community or similar.

This early in his career? You're kidding, right?

Even Murray doesn't think he deserves it.

he should get one at the end, or towards the end of his career, if he gets one now, what does he get if he wins 6 more GS titles? lord murray, let him concentrate on his tennis and leave the honours till he's 36, not 26

posted on 8/7/13

Give him ten years of winning then give it to him innit.

Knighthood for winning Wimbledon with only beating 1 player in the top 15?.

Unfortunately calls for Murray being knighted now are indicative of the attitude in this country.

There was even a commentator on 5 Live yesterday that said, "That's it. He's done it all now. He could just pack up his rackets and walk away if he wanted to..."

I know people were excited, but frankly that's a pathetic attitude. Especially to hear it on one of the UK's primary sports radio stations.

Sorry, I didn't mean he should be knighted tomorrow! Just that either after he retires or towards the very end of his career he should get one.

His tennis achievements blow away any other Male Brit for over 50 years, that shouldn't be taken lightly.

Fair enough, I'd agree with that. Just not now.

male brit sportsman? or tennis player?

Bradley Wiggins, Ryan Giggs, Chris Hoy, Steve Redgrave might have an argument over that one

Giggs didn't do anything at international level though.

So? Fed's tennis achievements have blown away any other Swiss champ in any other sport. Doesn't mean the royal family have abdicated and offered their seat to him!

Think these titles are being awarded far too nonchahalently and in sports its just ludicrous to be knighted especially after 1 Wimbledon! Let him win the next 9 in a row and then yeah maybe.

If he's still at the top or close in 5 or so years, then is the time to be thinking about one. Certainly hasn't done enough to warrant it yet.

Another Politician riding the coat tails of others.

The idea that Murray should be given a knighthood is risible at best and is symptomatic of the derisory honours system these days, where it is doled out like confetti and Paedophiles, Disgraced bankers etc are all members of the realm.

Fred Perry won 3 Wimbledon titles and had no knighthood; Laurence Doherty won 5 Wimbledon Titles and had no knighthood.

These honours should be given - if at all- to those who not only excel in their field over a length period of time but allied with an equally lengthy, extensive and comprehensive charity work!

Agreed. How many 'stars' got OBEs after the Olympics?

Just lessens the honours given to the truly deserving recipients.

Completely agree TRC. The problem is that a suggestion of a knighthood for him is going to have overwhelming public support because, for the most part, Britain is full of morons. This support for Murray's knighthood is just an attempt to make Cameron look good and playing to the national feeling.

Your last paragraph exactly sums up what sporting honors should be about.
