Greatest ever PL defender. He won't get credit for it but for me he will go down as an all time great in world football, I rate him that highly. Absolutely incredible player and captain. Irreplaceable.

On John Terry

Even at his best he wouldn't have got into the Italy 1982 WC squad, never mind the team

I'm sure many other wouldn't have either.

I think Chelsea fans overrate Terry but he's been performing at a very high level for over 10 years, so credit where it's due.

He's not an all time great defender though dazza, I wouldn't class Rio or Vidic as one either

Fair enough.

I guess it depends on your methodology, plus how many players you actually consider all time greats.

In terms of this era they are three of the best, and will be remembered as such in the future, just as many defenders from previous eras are.

I guess if they were Italian, or played in Serie A, you'd think differently, though.

The last defender I'd class as an ATG would be Nesta

Possibly Puyol in his prime

People didn't watch and analyse players like Baresi etcs performance week in and week out like they do Terry and so on.

It would be so interesting to see so called greats now, I think a lot of illusions would be shattered. Plus nostalgia often makes people overrate players.

Nostalgia isn't quite what it used to be.

Bobby Moore for example, would be interesting to see him every game for a season and actually realise if he was all that.

That's a fair point, Edin.

I think defenders in that respect are so much harder to compare, especially as a key attribute of a defender is consistency.

It's not quite the same for attacking players where their big moments, and the regularity with which they had them, are easier to compare.

Yeh exactly that Darren.

Even attackers to a slight extent as well though, we only really get to see the 'youtube highlights' of Pele, and hear other people talk about him.
Who knows what he is actually like, he could be no better than Neymar for example.

Yeah I agree it's true of attacker, but to a lesser extent.

The ability to come up with the goods when it matters for attackers has always been something people look upon favourably so these moments, and knowledge of their influence on a team, is a little easier to judge compared to a defender.

Be interesting to see how people talk about Messi and Ronaldo in the future.

Past greats are often spoken about because of their big moments, see Zidane, but these two have so many and will likely be speaking their big seasons.

Yeh Darren.

Messi will surely comfortably be remembered as the best of all time in 20 years.

posted on 30/4/15

Dunno if he will comfortably because even if he is surpassed nostalgia will still play a part, as you pointed out.
