Exactly RAP. Living down south (as you do too) it's hard for me to get to Anfield, but, when I do, I'm never disappointed with the atmosphere.
All the fans are singing YNWA at the start but what always surprises me (I go to about 4/5 games a season) is how loud it's played through the amplifier and thus providing difficult to drown out and it's even louder on the TV!
If and when liverpool have a champions league night at anfield again, you'll see how much it means to the fans. The unity and passion of Liverpool fans is unrivaled.

on tv the away support is usually below and to the left of the camera/mic?

This. Their first game back in the CL group stages, or even qualifiers if necessary will be a cracking atmosphere. As someone mentioned, it's unlikely that clubs will generate a fantastic atmosphere week in week out.
The latest one is 'Goodison is better for atmosphere'
I've been to Goodison many times and whilst it's full of men effin and blinding and the occasional Everton, Everton, Everton - there is no atmosphere
11,000 miles from Anfield...
I really don't think any other club in the entire world could beat this.

It bugs me more when Liverpool fans who have never even been to Anfield moan about the atmosphere because it sounds quiet on TV.
------------------------
It is unrivalled - the other thing that rarely gets mentioned is the sheer wit of the Liverpool fans - I am most of the times absolutely pi*5**ng myself at some of the banter.

To be fair most teams are like that.
People always bang on about the atmosphere at the likes of Celtic Park up here in Scotland and the reality is that, Old Firm and European games aside, it's terrible.
I've been to cup finals against Celtic fans and they barely make any noise until the last few minutes if they're winning. And these are supposedly "The Greatest Fans In The World".
Big games bring out big atmospheres.
I think with any stadium it can go absolutely dead at times.
I can't comment on Anfield but I go to Bournemouth games regularly and if the North Stand go quiet then the whole stadium goes quiet. But that's pretty rare...
Still watching that YNWA from the melbourne game yesterday over and over.
Incredible. Matches anything seen at Anfield IMO

Couldn't agree more
Last time I went to Anfield the only chant ringing round the terraces was...
'clap, clap, clap clap clap, clap clap clap clap Dalglish'

Pride, that really doesn't have the same ring to it when you write it out
Shearer you should have stayed on the telly
Great when he started laughing himself
I think you can only really comment if you have been to a variety of games at pretty much every ground.
The TV is very deceptive when it comes to crowd noise.
And when it's at its best, there's probably no better ground on the planet for emotion/passion/atmosphere
Agreed metro.
I mean it will never be quite as intimidating as the likes of the Istanbul derbies but it's so so much better.
At Celtic park a few years ago for a run of the mill league match and my mate and I fell asleep in the second half. It was a 4-2 scoreline too. Crowd was dead.

Exactly
Noise doesn't mean atmosphere, nor does intimidation
Zenit was terrifying though
Sounded like a cult.
No where near as good as it use to be and if i am honest not great....on its day there is no where that comes close but these days are very infrequent.
The crowds over in Australia and Indonesia put us to shame, we are desperate to win th league again and be back in the CL and improvements are needed in every department, players, ground etc but the crowd are no different...very average atmosphere nowadays at Anfield, our away support is still top class.
