Madrid do it because they can first and foremost and secondly because their fans demand marquee signings, sometimes more than 1 per summer. Also they have a truly outstanding team in Barca that they have to try and topple every season.
Even as a Gunner who thinks Spurs currently have a better side than us, I would rather they kept Bale for the simple reason Spurs could build something insane from selling him for the grotesquely overpriced sum they'll sell him for. Hell, his sale could fund a quarter of their planned stadium in one summer's business.
Stretford, teams aren't necessarily a sum of their individual parts. It's also about balance in a way that gets the best out of individuals and the collective. Except Bale is a replacement for Ronaldo, I'm convinced he would not improve Madrid's team.

You think Ronaldo is off then?
Bale has only had half an amazing season in his career and a couple of good ones
Prior to this season, his performances probably warranted a £35mil price tag. 1 year later and he's now worth £50mil more?
What did he do, win the WPOTY, CL and league title?? Oh wait, he finished 5th with spurs
Don't get me wrong, I thought £60mil would've been a good investment as he has bags of potential but £85mil is a huge risk. He's barely played in Europe before

Real Madrid have made a world record bid of over £85m to Tottenham for Gareth Bale, Sky Sports understands.

history shows that Sky Sports understanding runs at about remedial level
Funny how nobody has mentioned FFP in all this money spending.
I know Madrid have a big stadium and Government backing, but the fact it's expected they spend all this money tells me FFP is a waste of time really.
I'm really irritated about why Madrid couldn't keep their grubby paws off Isco, a player that would improve any team other than Barca, Madrid and Bayern. Just bought a world class talent to rub shoulders on the bench with the likes of Di Maria, Ozil, Modric, Illaramendi and Kaka. Facking id.iots ruining football and making La Liga the sunny SPL.

ONly one can drive...cannot be two although it takes two to tango...MMMMMMMM! can't see it!
It's happening.
Barca bid for Neymar, Madrid go one better
Also they have a truly outstanding team in Barca that they have to try and topple every season.
What was their excuse 10 years ago?

I am starting to doubt FFP but Real get bucket loads of money from their TV deal alone, let alone the rest of their income... which is huge.

Real are consistently in profit, remember. They could quite easily afford 85 million for Bale, particularly if they get him on a long term contract. It is not as simple as player costs 85 million, that shows as an 85 million loss this year - it doesn't, it is spread over the duration of the contract.
Crazy stuff
spain going through a major recession and real are throwing money around like confettl,
I concur.
And I know it's categorically impossible, but surely the fundamentals have to be level to enforce such rules.
I cite Monaco's tax exoneration as an example.
Even if we said no holds barred, MUFC are restricted by Premier League rules. I am just moaning now.... and just like the Ronaldinho situation, I hope to be blown out of the merciless waters that are the transfer window
Is the. La liga. Tv deal as lucrative as the pl deal
Depends if your name is Barcelona or Real Madrid...
If not then it is pennies in comparison.
I say fair play to Spurs and Madrid. I know the fee is ridiculous but if Madrid can afford it and the player will improve them then why not?
I sometimes wish our club would take the same stance and pay what is required. Had we. we might currently have Lucas Moura, Hazard and Sneijder in our side with little strengthening required,
id take the 85 million. bale is a decision player but in Ronaldo's class? nah
anybody think that with the state of Spains economy to pay 85m for Bale is a bit inappropriate for Madrid.. considering we know where their money usually comes from.
if bale is worth 85m and liverpool want 50m for suarez well chelsea should be told to fack right off with their 30m bid for rooney...
Bale isn't even worth half that.
