Was really not that bad....the game changed when Dickov took Duffy (the best player on the park) off and replaced him with Bennett (the worst player on our books.) Yes the marking was bad for the second goal but that aside there isn't much to complain about. Why should the keeper not go up for a corner when we're 2 1 down at home the first game of the season? Overall there's lots of positives. We knew we needed a forward and more defensive cover before the game, we will more than compete in midfield this season we just need a goal scorer. I for one am remaining optimistic.

DBA nail on the head mate.
We bossed the game first half, they scored with their only real chance. No idea what happened for their goal, too far away, but it seem turnbull saved 2 or 3 efforts, but our defence didn't manage to clear it. Thought turnbull was fouled during it all & ended up with a bandage on, seen them given for that. Duffy copps & cotts ran their defence ragged.
2nd half Blackpool were better, but we had them beaten until Duffy was removed, strange decision, he was MoM by miles. Sloppy defending for 2nd goal, no one at fault for the third, we just went after a point & fair play for that.

Where we failed today was taking our chances, we need more quality in the box, hopefully that will come. Not knocking Brownie though, he was excellent today.

Whilst I'm disappointed in the result, I can only get positives from today. Bring on the next game.

Have not read any other comments yet as just got in ! But I have to say there was some good football played today! Rovers lost in the first 20 and the last 20 in between we played some lovely football ! Very promising, I'm not down beat on today at all, yes there is apparent gaps in the team especially up front !! Wellens, copps, cotts, jones I thought played well , husband, Bennet and a couple more didn't play well at all !! I am gutted though cause we could of won that today, we had some really good chances!! Board need to sort something out and do what's right for the club !! RTID

I remember reading somewhere that the Oldham fans were often bemused by PD's substitutions. From what I heard Duffy was one of our best, so taking him off did seem a bit odd. Contrast Deano...

Well i am very down after that defeat today.
No way should we have got nothing from it.
Overall we were as good as, if not better than Blackpool.
If Turnbull did get kicked in the head making his saves just before their first goal then it should have been a free kick.
However sometimes you dont get the luck and we certainly didnt that time.
I thought that the team looked very good today and it is unfair to have a go at Brownie, he looks a good centre forward for the way our team was set up.
He holds the ball up great and brings others into play.
With a bit of luck we could have scored in the first half, we made the better chances.
I also agree with others that the turning point was the substitutions.
The more i see of Bennett the less i like him.
He looks like a boy in a mens league and Duffys' work and skill was missed when he went off.
I thought that the second change should have been Paynter for Brown so that we didnt change the shape of the team.
We went to bits after we went 4-4-2 and Blackpool got back on top.
It looked then very likely that they would get the winner.
Yes, they were strange changes but in PD's defence i have to say that i was impressed with the way he got the lads moving the ball around.
Cotts, Copps and Duffy were great to watch and they look likely to be a threat to other teams this season.
No doubt that some people will be hard to please and will have a go just because we lost but we all knew that it is going to be tough this season and mistakes will be punished more than they were last season.
The next fixture looks especially hard after the result at Barnsley today and we could find us starting with two straight defeats but it is a long season and i am hopefull that we will do ok.

Hound,
Obviously I wasn't today but it certainly sounds the kind of football I like to see. You don't always get the result you deserve but I can't wait to see that midfield perform. Young Dicky must see something in Bennett but what I just don't know?

Alex, had a long chat with Norm today.. He wants to know what happened to Sharpey, perhaps you should phone him.

Bally,
Yes I had a word with him after the game. He seems to have the same view as Hound, disappointed with the result but pleased with the performance.

Its a mystery about Sharpie It looks like it was a load of rubbish about him going to Barnsley. I would still like to get him but not if it risks the club financial stability.

I'm with the majority. If you didn't know anything about us you wouldn't have guessed there were four "new" players in the starting eleven. All three of their goals were avoidable I suppose, but the defence will get better. Two, fortunately isolated, examples of dithering from Husband then Quinn nearly cost us but overall both played well. Jones and Khumalo seemed to get on ok. Excellent midfield - Furman was my MoM but Wellens has also still got it, and the three wingers changing places behind Chris B all had moments of inspiration. (I love Cotterill's pace - he must scare defenders rigid.) Bennett came on - had a couple of nice surging runs then disappeared. If there is unease it is, as always, wondering who is going to score 10-15 goals for us.

I've sifted through the comments from yesterday and I can only echo really what:s been previously written.

I thought we played really well and held possession for large parts of the game with Copps, Cotts and Duffy creating problems in and around the box.

If Blackpool are to be regarded as a midtabled team then we wont be too far behind them as on their performance I thought they were garbage but that was due to our good play.

I'd have kept Duffy on as he was without doubt our best player at the time and combine that with Bennets introduction and us going 4-4-2 seemed to knock us out of sorts.

One area I picked up on was we seemed to get done a few times by their wingers and Quinny and Husband seemed out of sorts at times (hopefully just due to the start of season etc) and will soon be into their stride.

If Tom Ince is worth 8 mill then footballs getting even crazier than it already is! We did an excellent job of keeping him low and lets be fair he only scored as the net was wide open!

We could do with improving on our set pieces especially corners but we deserved a point and im already looking forward to tuesday!

Alex, i know what your football philosophy is and am sure that you would have enjoyed watching the game yesterday.
Azza is right when he says all the goals were avoidable but i guess that Blackpool would say the same about our goal, Jones made a great run and got a free header.
I think there was enough promise there to give us belief that we can make progress this season.
As for Bennett, well i think that everyone can see the potential that he has but he really does need to strengthen himself up and step up a gear or he will find himself drifting back down the ladder to L2 or worse.

Get a few in the get Bennet out on loan I think, The mutterings he was ushering were not helpful (close enough for me to see) the Foul??????????????? that the ref gave against him against their centre half was another ref joke. Bennett was on the floor a good couple of seconds when their centre half decided to stumble back and fall to the ground. A stronger ref would have walked some of theirs and the foul and booking he he gave against Furman, was in his view retaliatory for the foul (chop) on Copps a minute or two earlier when the scrap started. Strangely Wells was the peace maker - that will not last long

A reality check I guess. It was never going to be anything but a struggle to survive in this league with our budget. Nice to see an attempt to play watchable football but it ain't going to mean survival. Interesting to see how quickly PD can go from naivety to maturity. For me personally it will be better if PD sticks to his adventurous 4 2 3 1 but ,unless we get a really secure 4 at the back and someone who can finish, it will be frustrating for the fair weather fans. Prepare for a bumpy ride!

Having just had a look at their first goal on Sky Sports, there was nothing wrong with their first goal apart from the player kicking our keeper in the head when he saved the follow up shot and then Davies being in an offside position when the ball broke to him.
The ref though was in a bad position to see this, less than ten yards away with no-one in his line of sight.
Just a regular decision against us then?

Hey you. What's with the doom and gloom, are you stating that we are subject of a conspiracy I read your mail on Saturday and again now, I think you are either seeing the light (Some hope) or are just depressed) If it is the latter do not go to Dr Farmer, You end up very very poorly at the best

Preston 1 Blackpool 0 in League Cup

Pitch invasion and Police Horses.

And Ince missed a sitter again, but there was a goaly in net this time. YES THEY ARE MY TEAM TO HATE FOR NOW

Just watched Paul Ince's TV interview and agree entirely - Pitch invasions. Players could repeat could get stabbed and as we know players including goalkeepers are assaulted as have been outfield players.. Hillsborough was bad all round but Ince is correct that "When will we learn and when will we wake up and smell the coffee?" WHEN IT IS TOO LATE? Fences may have to re-appear . Then we have the possibility of Hillsborough again.. Very sad in society and sadly the way Football is going. He praised his 4,500 supporters for the way they behaved, well the same could be said about Donny's on Saturday at the antics of Mr Ince jnr. But be warned, it is heading for a disaster, it is happening all to often and after match ambushes and fights are discounted by the F.A. as not a football problem. It is Football that is the problem and many associated with it
