do they get the echo in Norway ?

Yes we do.
I think Kenny made the mistake when he paid £55m for him and Carroll! Aspas, Coutinho, Suarez, Costa (if and when) Sterling, Ibe will all be ahead of him in the pecking order. May as well get some cash back whilst we can!
Who are you to question the managers decisions anyway? He picks the squad and if he's not going to play Downing then what's the point of him staying?

Probably to free up wages,I'm sure he is on 70-80k a week.
Dowling IMO is worth about 6-7 million.
You paid way over the top for Downing, and to get 5mil for him is about all you can hope for.hope Newcastle don't look too closely at his stats.
I see Skrtel, Coates, Spearing, Pacheco, Downing, Assadi and Borini as all sell-able assets to raise funds as they will imo get little game time.
We would still have:
Mignolet, Jones, Ward.
Johnson, Kelly, Wisdom, Toure, Agger, Enrique.
Gerrard, Lucas, Allen, Henderson.
Ibe, Sterling, Coutinho, Alberto.
Aspas, Suarez, Sturridge.
That's 20 players.
Now bearing in mind Rodgers is looking for quality first eleven signings, I believe he will target possibly two players who cost a large sum but are pure quality.
If funds need to be raised then Downing, along with the others mentioned would largely not be missed, imo.
For example if we added Costa and Papa we would still consider that a reasonable 22 man squad wouldn't we ?
Just read it. Is he 29? I think 5 mill is way too less. We should try to squeeze more out. But if he is 29 and has 2 years left then i can see the temptztion to get rid. Thanks comollie for that one.
Its not just the 5M, it's the wages he's on as well...he's not good enough, even as a squad player in my opinion and does not represent good value for money.

Why just Comolli?
Dalglish has come out and said when he was here and after he left, the players signed when he was in charge where all his players!
Carroll - £35m
Downing - £20m
Don't just point the finger at Comolli, he was the boss!
£5mil still seems too cheap
£8mil seems more reasonable
Agree with scouseking, BR is doing exactly what we all wanted; getting rid of average players and replacing with hungry young talented players.
The group we have now is very good, if we do manage to get a decent defender and this costa chap, well to me thats a cl squad.

Carroll - £35m
Downing - £20m
king kenny saw a couple of bargains in those two didn't he
I think the only unbelievable part of the story is someone is willing to pay £5m for him
if its true, i think thats a good sign. i wouldn't think we'd let him go unless we thought we were getting someone else in. as it stands he'd still get a decent game. if a player like diego costa does come in as we expect, then its difficult to make a case for downing to play and justify the wages he's on
We have been trying to get rid off him all summer and now decided to give him away for £5m. Another high earner who is on the hit list along with Skrtel. If he goes I hope he is replaced as we will be lacking players who can play on the right as we know Ibe, Sterling and Coutinho all prefer to operate on the left.
Get rid, flog the deadwood
Deadwood was valid when referring to players like joe cole.
Downing, Reina and Skrtel are not deadwood, unfortunately they are victims of a new manager (perhaps less so Reina).
We need to let the club get on with it and offer our opinions once the window closes.
I like Downing's versatility and for that reason I think he is decent member of the squad.
However, if we're looking to bring in Costa, or another attacking player, then Downing would fall down the pecking order in his wide position. LB would be the other option as he has played there under BR. However, if we cover that position, which I think is likely, then he chances of playing are further reduced.
Factor in his age, his wages and the young players coming through Ibe and Sterling (although are better suited to the left) can play on the right, plus our reduced fixture list due to not having European football, reluctantly I agree it's time to sell.
My only concern would be if we sold him prior to bringing in an attacking option and a LB. I would hope we could do it the other way round, by getting players in first, ensuring we are not short in an area like we ended up last summer.
Downing has noooo creativity what so ever get rid of him rogers
I don't think Downing's quality is in question but his whole career he has been about beating his man and getting a cross in. He's just not suited to the system. He does a lot better when Sturridge is up top but it's painful to watch him waste his career with us.
You have got to factor in his stupid wages with the fee received.
If Newcastle or whoever, have to pay him near his current wages, lets say they pay 50k a week on 4 year deal, that's another £10m, which is why the fee has to he relatively cheap if we want to offload him.
Nobody is going to commit a £8m fee and another £10m in wages for Downing.
Not unless Kenny and Comolli rock up as manager and DOF somewhere else.
Get his wages off our sheets at least. He's cack and alwasys will be. Wouldn't sell for only 5m though - especially the way Newcastle behaved with Carroll.
