"Part time. I teach and translate, both as a freelance.
I used to do a lot more translation, but I've had a lot less work from my main clients the past couple of years so I've increased the number of teaching
hours I do. Problem is I teach telephone English
from home for a company based in Madrid, and
they've just lost their biggest contract, and right
now I don't know how much work I'll have after the Xmas hols."

I thought you were a teacher as in classroom-kids teacher. sounds a bit of a tentative period at the moment. Hope things turn out okay.

Hey Wump. No, I don't teach kids. Most of my students work in software engineering.

Don't worry about me, I'll be fine. Might be in for a couple of rough months, but it's one of the things you're exposed to as a freelancer - work shifts and changes like sand dunes in the wind. Currently considering organising some courses in English for careers - think there'd be quite a demand here for it in the health and tourism&travel sectors.

Morning

Sounds an adapted teaching role. But is it like a University? You can teach all sorts just depends on your speciality. If not, then I'm sort of unsure.

Just hope things improve for everyone. It seems tough times for both of you. Fortunately, I don't start until January 6th so got all of the festive period off however wasn't really wanting to get fired. A real shame. But that's life.

Things got a bit better towards the end of the year so its not that tough. I managed to obtain some student loans and got some freelance work that although doesnt pay much, helps cover the rent at least. Planning to go into business into the new year. Wish me luck

Ideas are still all over the place at the moment as I havent consolidated them yet. If I get enough capital I plan to import clothing from the gulf and sell them in Nairobi. Also thinking of opening up a butchery near my old home. The problem with the latter is I have absolutely no experience and knowledge in that area so it would be pretty tasking but I feel I'm up to it! Thanks man.

First thing I'd recommend is that you choose a biz where you can exploit your strongest skills.

Yeah, I am pretty skilled as a sound tech atm but I feel there is a bit more learning to do before I venture out. I want to enrol in a minor electrical course next year to supplement what I know now. What I know, I have learnt on the job but theres a lot you cant learn on the job and requires classes of some sort. Theres quite a huge market for that coming up in Kenya at the moment.

Have you done anything related to business management/administration?

hmm not really. Have attended some short entrepreneuship courses and seminars in uni though. Why do you ask? You think its necessary?

It depends on the scale of the business you intend to set up, but I think it helps even if it's a small business. If you're thinking about importing stuff legally, you'll need to know a bit about customs and taxes and the likes.

If you're into sound and electronics, maybe you could see if there's a niche you can fill in that sector. There are so many new things to learn when you set up a business, that it would definitely help to have some sound knowledge at least regarding the service or product you're going to sell.

Alternatively, try importing and selling this:
