Wumpy, the reason I referred to Atletico as the A and Madrid as the B team is that during the Civil War, the Spanish Air Force created a team called Aviacion Nacional. It was founded in Salamanca and then shifted to Zaragoza following the advance of the Fascist troops.
After the war they established themselves in Madrid, and then merged with what was left of Atletico Madrid, forming a side called Atletico Aviacion.
Although Aviacion boasted the best players at the time, they'd never played in the league before, so wouldn't have been able to go straight into the top flight. Atletico shouldn't have either, as they'd been relegated the last season before the Civil War -in fact, up to that point they had never even won a single domestic league or cup title -, but for the first post-war season they were eventually awarded the place of Real Oviedo, who were unable to put a team back together in time for the start of the competition.
Atletico Aviacion went on to win the first two Liga titles under Franco. In 1947 they broke their Air Force ties and became Atletico Madrid. Up to that point, they were the last team in Primera that still made the Fascist salute when lining up before their games.
Atletico went on to win La Liga again in 1950 and 51. It wasn't until 1954 that Madrid won their first Liga title of the Franco era, although they had won the Spanish cup twice, in 1946 & 47.
Up until that first Liga title for Madrid, Barcelona, Atletico, Athletic Bilbao, Valencia and Sevilla had all been more successful than R. Madrid.
There's a lot of untold history about each team's background. The story of Sunyol (Barça president) being executed by Franco's troops as he was trying to flee the country is well known, but barely anyone knows the story of Rafael Sánchez-Guerra, Madrid's pre-war president. I actually find it a bit disappointing that there's never been a great effort on behalf of the club to dispel a lot of the myths and folklore, and equally that few people have ever gone to any great length to paint a more complete picture of Barça's history than the romanticised, sweetened portrait they've ade of themselves.
It's this oversimplification that has led to a lot of the modern day depiction of the rivalry as being a 'fight between good and evil'.
Just had a look at Villa's wiki there just to see when he actually started scoring regularly. Double figures in all but 1 of his seasons as a pro, the one he broke his leg.
Just on the off chance anyone know anything about Ayoze Perez?
Ayoze Perez is the next Villa.
Are you signing him? Bit odd seeing as he's not French.
Apparently we're signing 2 Spanish players or are in talks to do so this summer. Be interesting to see how Pardew messes them up
Who is the other Spaniard?
A mystery spaniard. That Perez guy got 15 goals I think in segunda this season 2m euro buyout clause and has turned Porto down for us. Bad choice.
Oh really? Is Shola getting a new contract?

Look at Torres and I think it's the other way around
He turned down a new deal I really can't believe he did but he did apparently. Off to Hull.
He'll inevitably score the winner v us that hopefully gets pardew the sack then he can come back and manage us
Jelavic, Long and Ameobi.
Villarreal vs Hull 2015 Europa League final.
What about Liverpool when they get knocked out of the CL group stages?
Yes but they could finish fourth if they get Roma?
