I've only seen bits. It was the precursor to Naked Gun wasn't it? Might have to try and find it online.

I'm gonna go to bed. Night all.

nightmare start to the WC
i just want us ti save face , not lose against chile, beat australia..play some decent footy...

and go home !

i'd rather not qualify as group runners-up and lose to those brazilian in the next rnd

It was our worst defeat in over half a century, that's how bad it was.

I still want us to go through. I'd love to get a shot at Brazil. Just don't see it. If Holland beat Oz and Chile beat Holland (which they're perfectly capable of) the best we could hope for is a 3-way tie, and in those circumstances our goal difference would almost certainly sink us.

this spain team is like the prettiest, sexiest GF you could ever have, who eventually turns into a 20 stone, nagging monster of a wife 20 yrs later

I thought Spain would beat Holland, in all honesty I hadn't watched enough of Holland to understand what they were capable of.

I'd expect Spain to react positively from this but IMO they'll go no further than the second round. The writing was on the was from the confederations cup where they couldn't press the ball effectively (Nigeria had 47% possession in the first half v Spain, Italy destroyed them but couldn't finish and then Brazil did the same but took some of their chances).

Without being able to keep the other team in high defensive mode, what Spain try to do on a football pitch very quickly becomes a tactical disaster.

The personnel on the pitch and the setup can't handle quick passing and quick players or balls in behind the defence.

Del Bosque needs to be honest with himself and his players, If they can't press the ball he needs to either change the setup so they don't have to in order to be competitive or play younger players who can press the ball effectively. If nothing is done they might not even escape the group.

Hi AU. Totally agree. It's something I've been saying for a long time now. You have to play with much more energy than we've had for some time now and the problem is, this isn't something they can achieve in the space of a couple of games and with the personnel they have, Del Bosque should have addressed this a long time ago. The victory at the Euros only served to paper over the cracks, the signs of decay were already there back then.

Not too sure about that ioag. Koke in place of Xavi/alonso would solve quite a lot of problems with Silva also coming off for Pedro. Imagine Spain win their next two games then beat Brazil in the 2nd round.

It might help, but there are many more problems to be solved Wump.

Casillas seems to have lost his mojo. Yeah, he might still come good, but his recent form suggests otherwise.

Pique is a walking disaster. Javi Martinez teaming up with Ramos at CB looks like our only hope of sorting that.

Opponents will continue to give Azpi the right flank, but he doesn't offer anywhere near what we need there. Even if they played to our theoretical strengths, Alba looks badly off form.

Up front, we don't appear to know how to play to Costa's strengths. Koke might read his moves better, but even then, we need more runs from midfield. Did you notice how last night, when Costa moved wide to receive, there was absolutely no midfielder filling his space? Very often the closest players to goal were about 30 yards out and static. On the other hand, Villa's lost too much pace to worry defenders too much, and that leaves Torres as the only other striker who can gain a yard on his defender - but he could be put in front of goal without a keeper and still dawdle around wondering what to do.

If we are going to go more direct and retreat our defensive line, I actually wouldn't mind seeing Cesc come in for Xavi as his reading, short passing, vision, creativity and runs into the box are all superior to Koke's. Koke has his energy and long ball delivery going for him, but I'm not sure we'd be better off with that trade-off.

Imo, we need to try something radically different, maybe a switch to a far deeper 4-4-2, for example:

--------------------De Gea----------------
Azpi-------Martínez--Ramos----Alba
Koke----Busquets----Cesc----Iniesta
--------------Costa-------------Villa-------

MF could be flat or diamond with either Cesc or Mata at the tip of it.

Alba has to be included because, wtf , he's our only LB.

Wonder if there's a place for Pedro in that team up there. In place of Villa maybe?

Henrik, if we finish second and they top their group we could meet in the quarter finals.
