If that is a 4-3-3, it could actually be pretty good. Swap Gerrard out for Carrick and it would be something resembling a balanced team.

gerrard is undroppable for some reason though

Great, looks like welbs will be stuck on the wing again, unless stevie me is going to play there. Problem is he won't be able to play ill advised Hollywood passes from the wing.

As highly as I rate Jagielka, would much much prefer to see Hodgson make moves to put Smalling and Jones into CB, get them in young and give them the experience that they need to thrive at that level.

The lack of quality left footed players in this country is staggering. I'm 28 and it feels like we've been playing right footed players, often out of position too, on the left wing for AGES.

No balance to that side at all.

I remember as an outsider when these two countries used to have class players both have declined as have us Irish unfortunately

I think Hodgson is well suited to managing low-mid table teams and over achieving - see relative success at Fulham, West Brom, Switzerland. He seems less adept at managing better teams - see Liverpool, Inter Milan.

Unfortunately, with England he has a group of players that are mid table in ability, but with a World Class reputation, ego and expectation. I want him to succeed but I think its going to be a tall order.

If it's a 4/3/3, i think it is pretty balanced

-------Clevs, Wilshire-------
------------Gerrard------------
Walcott, Welbeck, Rooney

Walcott, Walker and Baines can provide plenty of width.

Too much to ask for that sort of setup though... I'm sure Clevs is LW and Gerrard is in the roy of the rovers slot.

John Barnes was probably the last left footed winger we had.

I don't mind Hodgson to be honest, that team looks pretty balanced to me. I highly doubt he is going to at 442 with it. You have to remember its a friendly a few days before the PL starts though, whatever the performance is, that has to be taken into account

Barnes was probably the last good one yes.

It is an absolutely terrible formation jspc especially gerrard as an attacking midfielder. Rooney or welbeck on the flanks... highly inadvisable

Of course

Then you will be fully aware that it doesn't involved either Rooney, Welbeck or Walcott playing on the flanks.

Ji

I would imagine it would be more like

------Gerrard, Wilshire-------
------------Clevs------------
Walcott, Rooney, Welbeck

Woy likes Cleverly further forward and Gerrard seems to definitely have a more withdrawn role these days, working from deep although IMO he isn't great at it, he can ping his Hollywood balls but little else.

you are probably right MU1982... My only thinking behind what i put is that i think Cleverley is even less suited for the AMF role than Gerrard.... At least Gerrard knows how to time his runs and find a bit of room around the edge of the box
