If Mata goes to Utd it guarantees them the title.
Unless we sign Rooney I think it's their title anyway...
We're more likely to win the title with Mata than you are Rooney.
If Rooney signs for Chelsea and wacks in 20-25 PL goals and ultimately wins the title..will that impact his reputation as the white pele?
I think a Rooney / Mata swap would be more beneficial to Chelsea. Chelsea would be getting a reinvigorated player who would be playing in his preferred number 9 role and that is clearly what Chelsea need at this moment.
Mata would be good for United but him signing doesn't address the real problem area they have which is central midfield whereas Rooney takes care of Chelsea's biggest problem position.
Of course if United go on and sign a couple of quality central midfielders as well before the end of the window then you'd have to look at it again and decide who got the better deal. But remember in two of the last four seasons Rooney has scored 34 goals so it's very possible he could be sensational for Chelsea. He is still only 27.
Number 9 has NEVER been Rooney's preferred position. People have only started saying this as the rest of his game has become crap so as a number 10 he's not actually that great.
Rooney will score goals, but then they'd also lose all that Mata gives them. And although they've got players of his ilk, none offer as much as Mata does in that role behind the striker. So in that respect they'd be weaker.
Whereas we'd be stronger as Mata is a far better player than Rooney. We'd have a better number 10 and a better number 9.
This deal strengthens United more than it strengthens Chelsea and why it will never happen. Chelsea aren't stupid.
