Currently, England has an enviable established batting line-up with 4 players averaging 47+.
KP 48.3
Cook 47.9
Trott 47.3
Bell 47.1
He will do well to make the plane to Australia the way he is playing. Really thought after the last series Down Under that he would threaten to get 10,000 runs - and in record time.
Technical problems he had at the start of test career are showing up again, but I believe he is smart enough to sort out the problems.
"He will do well to make the plane to Australia the way he is playing. "
Are you kidding??! Well yeah i guess the selectors could suddenly all take leave of their freaking minds and decide that they want to lose one of the greatest run scorers in the history of English Test cricket (already) and the highest test century maker EVER for England.
However, given that they are not going to take the advice of the monumentally insane then i think its safe to say he will make the plane journey.
On a separate note, its bizarre to see all these so-called experts banging on about how the 'initiative' is now with the Aussies.
I really HOPE that they think it is, but anyone with an ounce of sense should probably sit up and take a note of some salient facts before they start to write England off down under.
FACT ONE - We haven't played well, But the Aussies should beware - its hard to see Cook playing as badly as this again, and unfathomable that Trott or Prior should do so. All are gifted players and the Aussies will have to be wary of them.
FACT TWO - A lots been made of the likes of Harris, and how well he has done - and I will admit he has bowled well but he is still injury prone. Add that to the fact Patterson broke down and also other injury problems and Ausralia's ageing squad and to my mind England still rule the roost
FACT THREE - The Oz batting really isn't that good is it? Lets be honest its Watsons what, third century and Smiths FIRST? Who else do they have? Clarke for all his brilliance didn't do much. Unless Australia unearth someone of huge potential they don't have anyone the likes of Pieterson, Cook, Trott and - to my mind - Bell, yeah i know we have not done well this time, but thats just been a one off. I doubt like i say it will happen again. Good batsmen don't become bad batsmen overnight.
Oh, and FACT FOUR - If we make the necessary adjustments and have plenty of Yorkshiremen over there in Oz we will win easy!
Non-subcontinental greats are FORCED to retire early, is my observation.
People are already guessing that Pietersen, 33 is going to retire after the next ashes. Strauss retired at 34.Vaughn too at that age.
Before, this Ashes, I genuinely believed Cook had a chance but now, he would do good to be 2nd most prolific.
However, if he's not pressured into retirement and if he continues to play till 39 or 40, then Cook WILL DEFINITELY break Tendulkar's record.
But cant see Cook playing past 35 years of age ie another 7 yrs at most and at his current rate about 14000 runs 45 tons.
Cooks having too much to think about as captain. Closely scrutinized. Too much going into his head.
I dont think he's been able to give his 100% focus on his batting. And that is especially detrimental to Cooks batting because Cook, more than most other batsmen, buys his run of that immense power of concentration which used to compensate for his other technical shortcomings. But having to captain england and then open the batting surely has affected his concentration level at batting and as a result, his reduced batsmanship.
Despite his initial success with bat as captain, i truly believe that Batsman Cook with a pressure-free mind(ie not captain) >burdened, drained, less focused Captain cook.
There was a time English teams were called 'Dad's Army'.
Alec Stewart and D'Oliveira were 40 when they played their last match. Boycs, Illy, and Goochy went to 41; Titmus, Graveney, Cowdrey, and Emburey until 42; Hammond until 43, Brian Close (what a sight it was watching him without a helmet battered by Holding & Co) and Gubby Allen until 45; and not to mention the very very old-timers - Woolley (47), Hobbs (47), Grace (50), and Rhodes (52).
It's rare now to see test cricketers pushing 40. With different formats and hectic schedules, it's very difficult now. After Tendulkar, we may see a handful, no more. Maybe Kallis, Chanders, Mahela, and Sanga among the top players.
yh its very hard to see any of these young age players play more than 35 years of age. Pieterson in the interview with warne said he eyes 10000test runs and 2015 wc, but he also said he has been getting more injuries in the recent past and will assess how things go.
I dont think cook will be able to match Tendulkars record. Kallis and tendulkar are the last bunch of players we have seen that goes till 38+ playing cricket.
Now players get so much money from t20, as well injuries that even 35 seems like a milestone.
Not just tendulkars record, I don't see any cricketing record in test cricket being broken by any player ever.
Kallis, Warne, Murali, Mcgrath, Tendulkar, Ponting and so many legends have set records that are so high, and they dedicated more than half of their life in cricket.
KP is currently at 7825. He is only 33, but appears worn out.
The last test cricketer to play until 40 years was Gooch in 2003.
Now, we have Tendulkar. I believe Chanderpaul will push for one more year to retire at 40.
Gooch? I think you mean Stewart!
You are right, terrier. The last was Alec Steward in 2003. Thanks for correcting me.
Talking about 40+year test cricketers, here is video of Brian Close battered and bruised by Holding:

Couldn't help feeling we would have won if Cook and Trott had scored at a slightly faster rate.

Man with out helmet that too against WI quicks in their heyday. I doubt Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting, Kallis would even consider walking into middle with out one.
Voice,
Holding bagged 28 wickets at 12.7 in 4 tests in that series.
Roberts got 28 wickets at 19.2 in 5 tests.
Close managed to average 33 runs or so. I believe he was called into the team as an SOS measure.
That was the series when Tony Greig made an inappropriate comment that turned the WI bowlers very hostile.
