Not long ago our back up players were the likes of senderos, santos, denilson, chamackh etc.

Now we have top quality back up like vermealen, monreal, arteta and podolski.

There is nothing much he could say other than this, so nothing awkward about it.

I'm glad he stayed.

It would have been risky to bring in a replacement for him in the summer and I'm happy that a player of his quality is happy to be third choice at Arsenal.

I doubt he really is, I just think he's lost loads of confidence but I don't want him to leave.

The way we defend as a team it should help vermaelen when he does play, won't make as many mistakes, he has no chance to displace mertesacker or koscielny ability wise, needs to wait for injury or suspension

Nothing awkward about this. If anything great commitment. If that was anyone else they would have been sulking and saying "why I'm I on the bench when I'm the captain of the team"

IMO TV is or best defender individually compared to the others but as a pair Mert abd Kos are better. However this doesn't mean he can't form a partnership with them.

I still remember his first season with us...He was amazing and even got in the team of the season. Just the injuries have affected him but like Ramsey he'll be back

Vermaelen is easily our most handsome player, even more than Arteta and Giroud.

But perhaps more important, he started off as one of our best players. I recall him and Gallas being our top scorers for a while.
Perhaps that in itself is indicative of a time when we were a lot looser, tactically, and made flippant remarks such as 'So what if we let in goals - we just have to score more!' and so on.
Vermaelen also earned a great reputation for being indestructible, and had the combatative qualities that earned him the captain's band.
I hope he has a chance to force his way back into the team first-choices. One of my favourite players.

Yes !!!!!

Kos this time last season was on the bench now he's a starter. Vermaelen has a big role to play this season and he will get plenty of playing time.

Sad thing is all this time as 3rd choice, he probably wont be starting for belgium in the summer
