Yeah we need some width, but with a 4-2-3-1 formation isn't there always that danger it'll become too narrow anyway?

442 at home against defensive teams. Has to be. Defoe was so isolated today. When he did get the ball he had no support and was shut out. Townsend created some width, got a fair few crosses in, but again, Defoe was in there on his own. All 5foot of him.
Chronic - I don't agree. Where is the width going to come from?
Townsend is slogging his nuts off on one wing. Yet there will never be any width on the other wing - Siggy, Lamela.
Contrary to popular belief, the achiles heel is still the defence. The team may have only let in five prem goals, but basically it has resulted in 8 lost points. The defence will cost the team, as it has every season for the past 20 odd years. And the problems at the back are still not being addressed.
Siggy started on the left solely for his recent performances. I'd usually agree on that. But after 10 minutes it was clear that it wasn't working. AVB got it completely wrong tactically.
We need these lessons in a way. Learn and move on. Chadli would have been a good shout.
The continued wisdom of sandy.
We have only scored 6 in 7 games but the defence is still to blame.
Glad I'm not the only one that thinks this. We haven't seen nearly enough of either of our lone strikers in this formation.
Sandy
To be fair we brought in defensive players in the summer, and there has not been any cause for concern until now. I would say the main issue for now is getting more goals.

why didnt avb just try townsend on the left for a spell when it wasnt working?
he played well but was so predictable.
Makemyday, Sandy raises a good point to be fair.
1. We were at home.
2. West Ham didn't even have a striker on the pitch.
3. We let 3 in.
will we ever sort ourselves out from set piece?
Chronic - fair enough swap wings.
Don't take this as 'panic' but do you think AVB is fully up to it management wise regarding tactics?

hopefully. today was bad though. tactically outdone by fat sam. but it was obvious that west ham would try to do what they did
the big problem is how can a team that has set up for a draw come away with a 3-0 win?!
that is why its valid for sandy to question the defence imo.
i can accept not scoring at home to west ham, who have parked the bus. i cannot accept conceding 3 at home to a side to who park the bus unless they are a top side, and even then probably not.
Townsend may have been predictable but what else do you want?
At least he was being direct.
The attacking play is really concerning. Who are going to score the goals is the question that needs asking.
i know i would like to see Ade back in the team.
if that meant playing 442 then yes. Not with Defoe and Soldado, not for me - far too similar.
Chronic - decent analysis again but I am seriously worried about creativity.
Apart from 30 mins against Norwich, Eriksen has been non-existent.
eriksen has overall been quite disappointing but i dunno. there is something about spurs at home. not just avb, we had these kind of days under harry too (ok not 3-0, but poor poor 1-0 defeats, and lots of them).
every single "lesser" side that visits the lane knows exactly how to play against us. the blueprint is there for all to see and it has been proven to work time and time and time again.
it doesnt matter who we buy we still have the problem.
and why is it that no matter who we buy we cant get a corner over the first man?
Chronic
To be perfectly honest as bad as the team played, no way should they be letting in three goals against a team that has not scored an away goal all season. Something seriously wrong with the defence, and just because they have had a few clean sheets this season it has papered over the cracks.

That's as maybe ... but defense is not only about the back four.
It has to do with who is in your midfield and wot you tell them to do.
AVB's tactics against a parked bus were simply naive.
If he wanted 3 points (instead of zero) Sandro, Lamela and Soldado had to be on for all of the second half. That was clear by half-time.
Sandro to lock down the midfield.
Lamela to draw the bus out.
Saldado to give them more than Defoe to think about.
Siggy, Dembele, and Eriksen just didn't do it. Wet Spam are not a bad team.
Siggy ----> Eriksen <---- Townsend
That is why Eriksen has been disappointing. His role is to find space in attacking places and feed the striker or spread it out wide I believe. Unfortunately the inverted wingers are congesting the space, stifling Eriksen and making us extremely easy to defend against.
Can't see Soldado and Defoe forming a good front two partnership. Either one with Ade possibly.
Would like to see a left footed left winger and a right footed right winger both busting a gut to get to the by-line and get in loads of crosses especially at home. Give our midfield options and keep the opposition guessing. The way we are playing at the moment once you suss out how to stifle us we struggle to do anything different.
