A good well thought out post.
Do the BCCI put pressure on top players to appear in the IPL? I've always assumed that to be the case.
Sehwag should not have appeared this year to have the operation on his shoulder, yet he played through the pain, had the op afterwards and now we see the results.
The Indian fans are very loyal, and deserve much better than what is currently on offer.
I agree with everything you have said, you really do deserve better.
"Do the BCCI put pressure on top players to appear in the IPL? I've always assumed that to be the case."
I think it is a combination of the BCCI pressurning the players to play, so their brand is more appeling. Plus the players wanting to play, because the money is appeling.
I know the spin doctors will write this series off as a blip, but how much longer will the fans stand for a performance like this? What happens if the next series is the same?
Who have you got next?
The players are equally to blame.
I don't doubt the professionalism of most, but some have to have a good look at themselves.
- Singh giving his wicket twice at Lords for no other reason than he didn't fancy being peppered.
- Khan being out of shape and frankly overweight.
- Dhoni being completely silent behind the stumps. No fight. What on earth is going on with his keeping? Lack of concentration?
- A lot of guys living off former glories.
The most obvious thing is the lack of spirit and fight. Lets be honest, compared to England, they have been lazy in the field.
And Indian fans -
The pressure put on Sachin is ridiculous.
Too many prima donnas in the team, just waiting for their next big advertising cheque.
This series is certainly not a blip. If anything, it should be an eye opener for the BCCI.
We play Australia in Australia next.

What I can't understand is that why it is so hard for professional athletes like Zaheer and Yuvraj, both of whom have access to the world's best coaches and facilites to keep their gut down?

Because Indian food delicious!
Sounds flippant but in the case of Zaheer is blatantly true. There is no excuse, look at the way Bresnan conditioned himself. Its about commitment. If an established player loses his desire its hard to get it back.

No better time to call it quits.
WUMs having a hay day?
I didn't know Red Indian and Indiasox were out today!
seriously though, if there is anyone to blame it is the BCCI. not having enough time to acclimatise to england was ENTIRELY the BCCI's fault.
I wouldn't so much blame the players, age and injury are catching up with them, you can't blame them for that.
Sad really, its so boring now.
Haven't seen a more one sided Test match for...can't remember one.
We are watching the end of a great team, in pretty sorry circumstances.
Have the BCCI made a similar mistake to the Indian tour in England as per their schedule? They play only one 4-day match before the 1st Test then they play four straight Test matches.
18-21 v Cricket Australia Chairman's XI, Canberra (2245 GMT, 17-20 Dec)
26-30 1st Test, Melbourne (2330 GMT, 25-29 Dec)
January
3-7 2nd Test, Sydney (SCG) (2330 GMT, 2-6 Jan)
13-17 3rd Test, Perth (0230 GMT)
24-28 4th Test, Adelaide (0000 GMT)
or has too much been made of this?
I know England have been criticised in the past of not playing enough 1st class matches before the tests start and also fiddling around with picking more than 11 for a match so they can play more 'proper' batsman in an innings.
Honestly, from the behaviour of indian fans on 606 and now here this is just about all you deserved.

totally agree
And what happened to the new bowling talent that IPL was meant to discover!
"And what happened to the new bowling talent that IPL was meant to discover!"
It was just a load of horse crap to justify IPL.
IPL to me is nothing more than a business which'll do anything to improve their bottom line.

They let a few bad apples mold your opinion. With the IPL and 20/20 we have been flooded with new 20-20 loving fans. They don't have any knowledge of the game and talk trash at the best of times.
