Pele and Maradona were the greatest players in football. Was Sachin ever the greatest cricketer?
His greatest achievement is the run getting and longevity with the amount of games he played. However there are other cricketers that fall in the Pele and Maradona bracket
I always viewed Tendulkar as Enemy's Ponting and Ponting was my favourite.
How about that for a perspective?

Kash, whats your reason for calling Maradona the Greatest footballer?
Maradona single handily won Argentina the world cup. Went to little Napoli and made them Seria A champions. The most skilful player ever to grace the game. Of course it ended badly with the drugs etc. but he was easily the greatest.
However there are other cricketers that fall in the Pele and Maradona bracket

Bradman, Sobers, Kallis, Khan, Lara, Marshall, Warne etc etc
Kash, There's no football equivalent for Bradman, yet.
A footballer needs to score a goal every match to be Bradman.
Kash is simply missing the point here. Kash has obviously only seen Tendulkar play against his own team – where sach had a humble average both home and away - and therefore discrediting Sachin’s achievements. Taking away sachins faint test record vs kashs team, Sachin was and always will be a legend.
I know for a fact that , the game of cricket when viewed globally is a minority Sport. Only the overpopulation of India, Pak and Bangladesh brings crickets numbers up. As such, comparing Tendulkar, a Giant of a tiny sport with the Gods of the world game Football is very apt and just.
Tendulkar is Cricket's Hercule Poirot.
Bradmam is Sherlock holmes himself.
One of the greatest cricketers of all time indeed.
Unprecedented feats in test cricket as well as ODI cricket.
Remarkable longevity.
Genuinely humble man devoid of controversies.
Maybe stuck around a bit too long, but leaving with a lot of love and respect from fans all over the world.
Salute from an Englishman. I will drink an expensive bottle of champagne in your honour, Sir.
Tbh growing up for me he was the GOAT. I never saw Bradman so I can't comment. I don't know quite what it was but ever since I was a kid my father said watch this lad son and I did. His footwork and timing equisite and watching England play against India I always hoped that we won but Tendulkar made a century, such was I drawn to the man.
Also what I like is how he's stayed humble and controversy free over his career mostly. That's why I like the man, others have their opinions like Kash but for sure in my eyes a legend steps down today
I do believe he was the greatest batsman of his generation. Certainly the most complete, technically.
Perhaps he became known as more of a run machine more than anything, as his career went on and with the changes he made to his game after his injuries.
But he was a very entertaining batsman as well as being very orthodox. Especially when he was younger and on his first trip over here.
I do believe he should have quit about 2/3 years ago now, in a stellar Test series in England or Australia or after the World Cup even, slightly low-key ending for such a figure.
I'd have him in my all-time XI, he was an outstanding player in an often average batting unit. Produced in all conditions against some very good attacks.
Not my favourite batsman I've watched, that being Barry Richards but up there none-the-less. It will be slightly strange.
Heck, we were still the best football team in the land when he was starting out! Time does fly.
Happy retirements.

If we measure greatness purely on runs accumulated, Tendulkar is the greatest ever.
In test cricket, the next best among not-yet-retired is Kallis, who is about 2700 runs behind, and unlikely to catch up.
His record for most runs in ODIs is untouchable in the next 10 years at least. The next best is about 5k runs behind and already retired.
I reckon Kallis could come.very close to catching Sachin Imo. Hes got at least 3 years left on him and hos batting seems to be getting better.
Kallis will be 38 next week. Number of test matches he played in the past 3 years:
2011 - 5
2012 - 9
2013 - 4
At this rate, I do not believe he can catch up Tendulkar's aggregate.
"A great player but struggled against part time Off spin @sachin_rt !!!!!! #BornToPlayCricket."
Michael Vaughan, former England captain, via Twitter
Now, before Tendulkar fans get all worked up to spit at MV, that was lighthearted tweet about him clean bowling Sachin in 2002 at Trentbridge.
Shane Warne: "Sachin Tendulkar is, in my time, the best player without a doubt - daylight second, Brian Lara third."
Ponting and Kallis can't be pleased with that Warne comment.
If the best bowler says so, then whats left to argue?

Probably true but if SA can play 9 tests in a year like in 2012 then you never know.
Kallis might even play longer as his batting is still right up there. Sachin as good as he was, was not batting too good for the past 2-3 years imo.
Kallis will have some nice flat tracks in UAE to move up the charts.
Is Sachin the greatest batsman ever?
Daily Torygraph poll:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/cricket/international/10369214/Is-Sachin-Tendulkar-the-greatest-batsman-of-all-time.html
Sachin 65% to Don 19%!!
That's insane. Reflection of who voted. May I assume 70% of the voters were Indian?
Of course it was Robbi, Tendulkar wasn't even the bes of his generation.!
