Hell, almost a year ago we'd lost our 3rd game of the season at Norwich and you did an article saying it might be time for Sir Alex to quit!

Dunc, we were just as bad last season, especially at the start. Hell, almost a year ago we'd lost our 3rd game of the season at Norwich and you did an article saying it might be time for Sir Alex to quit!

Fack off robb. Stop making up things.

We were unbeaten in the league for 20 or so games and were on course to beat Chelseas record of most points

Ultimately, possession, pressing and formation are all linked, possession on its own doesn't really mean anything unless it is coupled with where it is on the pitch. Some teams build up slow from the back and work the ball into the final third, others try to get the ball forward quicker to capitalise on the other team potentially being slow in the defensive transition phase.

There is no right or wrong answer to any of it, just different ways of playing.
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Exactly the point i'm trying to make in the article. I'm not saying one is better than the other. Just that there are many styles of play and they all have their benefits.

Fans don't need to moan when they see they aren't winning the midfield battle because so many times the defensive battle and the offensive battle are just as important.

I know they're chances but I don't like when people assume shots that hit the woodwork are any better than ones that went wide or high, they're all off target.

Really? Wow. You are a plum.

the problem we have is we arent a team that can break fast, and we arent a team who press high up the pitch.

so what are we??

to me we are disjointed and too unbalanced.

we are making too many changes to the team on a regular basis and there is no cohesion.

With the amount of times we relinquish the ball very easily, can you imagine how knackered our players would be if we pressed all game?

Run like hell until you win the ball back, bumble it to Fellaini, he passes back to the opposition run like hell some more, win the ball back, give it to Evans, Jones, Vidic or Ferdinand they punt it long to the forwards, but it is mis-controlled and we lose it again.

Yeah, but your question was about chances created. Rooney getting the ball a few yards from goal and blasting it against the crossbar was a massive chance that was created and it was he alone who missed it rather than any brilliance from Saints.

Maybe one loss. But we were on course to beat CFC's record of most points.
And till the Madrid game we hadnt lost a single game when Rooney and RVP started.
Robb is trying to say we were as useless last season as we are now which is false

The sad thing is, we've all seen this countless times.

The problem is we don't have the players to play a high pressing game, it requires stamina and lots of mobility. And the one thing our midfield lacks, is just that. Mobility. Plus we have quite a few older players who don't have it in them to press

So did we lose at Everton? Yes. Did we lose at home to Spurs? Yes. Did we lose at Norwich? Yes. Did we struggle to beat Villa, Reading, Saints, Stoke, Fulham and Braga, all before the end of November last season?

Yes, so please don't make out like we were amazing in the first half of the season last year because we weren't.

Yes exactly DP, but without the pressing.

With our ball retention at the moment if we pressed all game we'd need Mo Farah and Haile Gebrselassie in midfield to last the distance

Not a whole lot worse and if anything we're much better in Europe.

You guys shouldn't play a high pressing game, it doesn't suit your defence, midfield or attack for me.

So why were we on course to beat Chelsea's highest point total of 95?
We were effective and lethal last season.

Well, we didn't beat it did we? I could just as easily say that if we win the rest of our games we'll beat Chelsea's points record this season.

Doesn't make it something worth using in a debate.

In the latter part of the season, yes, I agree. However, for the first 2 months or so, we were poor.

This year is a bit skewed because in the first 9 games we played City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

People act like possession comes from actively deciding to have possession. I think you will find that teams with skilled player on the average have MORE possession. Also stats will show that on average teams with possession have more success than those without. Want a simple way of determining which relegation club is going to survive, more often than not possession has a lot to do with it.

I'll give you a simple exercise; final 4 for the last 5 yrs in CL. Class them as possession based and counter attacking teams, see how many are possession teams. League winners too.

By the way, both possession and counter attacking football requires a good midfield. It will come as no shock that possession teams are ALSO good counterattacking teams. In fact there are rarely any changes in players just mentality.

Also, the amount of teams that have based their tactics mainly on counter attacking and succeeded are few and far between. They are usually good cup teams but fails in the leagues.

Put a possession team against a counterattacking team and 9 out 10 times, the possession team will win. Let's not use the minority of occasions as the argument (which is a robb specialty)
