It doesn’t in itself. Again, it’s what happens across 34 games. One freak result doesn’t offset 33 others (unless it’s 25-0 or something, which obviously never happens in the real world).

It wasn't particularly fair on Northampton that Bristol Rovers spanked 7 past a 17 year old debut keeper and a bunch of other kids cos Scunthorpe were long relegated and past caring.

Why are points across two games a fairer measure than, say, wins across 34 games then? Same reason?
And again, over 34 games, one seven goal drubbing has relatively little impact when compared with, say, one of the head-to-head games falling during an injury crisis, or between two other big games, or jammed into a fixture pileup for one of the two teams.
Same reason that promotion/relegation playoffs are massively unfair, IMO.
Okay. United go intoa final day game level on points with Liverpool, but a +6 goal difference. United play CL chasing Spurs, who field their strongest XI. Liverpool play mid-table Southampton, who start eleven 16 year olds.
United fight for a 2-0 win,but Liverpool win 9-0 to take the title.

On the other hand, the H2H was a United 1-0 home win and a 1-1 draw. Games played between the two on the day's. No outside influence.

I wouldn’t believe it, because I wouldn’t believe that Southampton would field a side containing eleven sixteen year-olds.
I don’t think the league would look at all favourably upon that, and I’d expect widespread condemnation from all corners of the game, and probably a police investigation into match fixing. I wouldn’t expect the Soton boss would keep his job, honestly.
Look, United have lost the league on GD before. Didn’t change my opinion of the measure. It’s imperfect, sure; and I’d put wins across the season ahead of it. But I’d want any bunch of measures across a season considered before even thinking about H2H results, including disciplinary.
