It's a total myth that Saddam played hardball over the inspections. Scott Ritter, the chief UN weapons inspector in Iraq is on record (a quick google check will show you this) as saying that Iraq was fundamentally disarmed. That was in 1998, 5 years before the invasion and ensuing bloodbath.
-----------------
i know. I've read it. It was scary as hell what he found. I think it was the VX gas factory, that the inspectors found purely by a fluke, that was the scariest bit
All the way through that report it highlighted the lies after lies that Saddam and his regime were spinning.
It amazes me that people want to spend their time defending creatures like Saddam Hussain rather spending their time turning it all onto the west
No matter what, This man needed removing from power.
Someone tell VC that Macca completely missed my point and that i'm not some kind of terrorist sympathiser.
The British Service men and women were and have been partaking in an illegal war. They were brainwashed in doing so by there drill sergeants in the same way others are brainwashed into blowing up planes etc

Is Iraq in a better or worse situation now he's gone?
Half a million people died in the Iraq war and today car bombs are a fact of life for people in Baghdad.
ah, now, even thats taking things too far.
i for one, have ultimate respect for any service man/woman, ready to serve their country.
come on man....
it surely is a disrespectful thing to say, that our servicemen, went in willingly to kill, rape, pillage.
sure there's some bad apples, have to get dealt with accordingly, but these people are putting their lives on the line....
VC,

Admin1,
China cannot compete militarily with the US, not to mention the US has over 800 military bases all over the world. I'm doubting China's ability or capacity to grow economically, but the notion of it being the leading superpower are vastly premature.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Totally disagree. Russia had/has a huge military might, which wasn't a million miles from the US, but economically was not on the radar as far as influence to the extent China now is. The US nerally dropped off the fiscal cliff recently including the budgetary closure of war museums. If that isn't a sign of severe economic issues I don't know what is.

Not from the corrupt governments that took him out of power.
I'll repost what I said...
Macca, I find it astounding that you come up with that opinion based on what i've written on here. Frankly astounding.
Throughout history it has been the powers that be who start wars and the soldiers who are the ones to suffer. And I have not once said anything that makes the British soldiers to be the 'bad guys'.
All I have maintained is that the powers that be whether it be the US government led by Bush and Rumsfeld and their Haliburton interests in Iraq or whether it be the British politicians in World War 1 taking over the oil fields in the Middle East and any other dodgy behaviour by the powers that be, it is the little people that suffer.
Again, it's astounding that you could think i'm trying to paint soldiers as the bad guys here.
The British Service men and women were and have been partaking in an illegal war. They were brainwashed in doing so by there drill sergeants in the same way others are brainwashed into blowing up planes etc.
----------------------------------
That has to be a wum
Soldiers arn't brainwahed. They follow orders.
Berbaking, Have you seen how much the US owes to China? and the balance of trade figures? Do you think these are reducing? Maybe China is simply a manufacturing hothouse but the reality is that the US is almost bankrupt. The US is in decline. Bringing up human development indices doesn't mean much. The simple act of dropping the dollar as the petro-currency would be catastophic for the US economy. What happens if the Chinese say that they want oil to be traded in yuan? Why wouldn't they want to do this?
The US is vastly more powerful militarily so maybe they won't relinquish control without a fight but they are clearly in decline. How many months will it be before we have the next fiscal cliff panic?
It's not even through military might that makes China the dominant force. The US owes them an absolute ton of money and that debt grows every day.
The Chinese would never bankrupt the US because that would destroy the worlds economy but the US are probably forever be selling off parts of their country to the Chinese.
I think people talk about China as a super power economically not militarily.

i've been warned by Admin to keep that off the site so all I'll say is that the British servicemen do not murder innocents (I know there may have been isolated cases) so to bring up the amount of innocents killed in iraq is just wrong.when comparing it the amount of innocents killed by terrorists. There is a fundamental difference in the intention despite the tragedy of the events being totally comparable
Macca,
"It amazes me that people want to spend their time defending creatures like Saddam Hussain rather spending their time turning it all onto the west

---------------------
I'm not defending Saddam. However, I, like you, are responsible for that which we can affect. So in this context, 'our' (UK) actions. We supported him through his worst crimes. That support was done in your and my name. The genocidal sanctions were done in your and my name as was the murderous invasion. We aren't supposed to ignore our role. Our role is the most important part as we bare some (actually, lots!) responsibility for it. It's the most basic and elementary of moral principles that we take a lot at ourselves and our own actions first.
It is also entirely illegal to force regime change. There's a good chance that, had we not decided to cripple the Iraqi people (sanctions), they'd have found a way of ousting Saddam themselves. We'll never know of course. We made sure of that.
China cannot compete militarily with the US

They are not battle-proven. But their army is extremely impressive.
Big difference in the current US and UK economies.
The UK is addressing it's budget deficit, and the economey looks to be heading in the right direction.
The US isn't. And the longer it doesn't the more cards China will hold.

The reality is that one or two nukes put you at the top table. Whether you have 2 or 2000 I don't think it matters that much. So in that regard i think the economic field is where the power plays will play out. The UK have already ceded this to China.
