Depends. Not many people thought Torres would continue on being as poor as he was. Whilst Torres was in his prime, I would say he was better than Aguero will ever be. So that might have factored into the deal. On top of Luiz having more potential than Godin, though he would've been pretty sick in the Prem.
From my point of view back then, the Aguero-Godin deal would've looked better.
Believe our biggest incentive to push through the Torres transfer over the potential Aguero one at a higher value was his superior commercial assets particularly in the PL. Where payback on the pitch is concerned we've won both European cups since the deal happened, so we've not done too badly for ourselves in a business sense.
I'm happy with Luiz & Torres, do feel the weight of a missed opportunity in Aguero & Godin
I guess I didn't consider how I felt back then. I was one of the few against the Torres move and always wanted Aguero to come to Chelsea, so I guess I just felt similar to how I felt back then as Aguero and Torres have just done how I expected them to do.
Luiz/Godin is different as I wasn't even keen on a CB..now glad we got Luiz though and can see why a CB was needed.
I was completely indifferent, just wanted one of them.
Luiz potential? He's gotten worse since he's joined us IMO and has not learnt from his mistakes. Would of taken the other deal 10 times out of 10
Me and Brummie always wanted Aguero from back when we were first linked with him and my opinion that we majorly fecked up by not signing him hasn't changed over the years.
Wouldn't have wanted Godin
Happy with Luiz instead of Godin but Aguero really would have been a much better signing. At the time I wasn't really too keen on a marquee striker anyway, but if we were planning on splashing big, then Aguero was definitely the better option for pretty much every reason - age, versatility, cheaper and most importantly at the time he was playing better.
I always wanted us to get Aguero. Aguero at the time was one of my favourite players, probably my favourite player outside of Chelsea. I was never that happy about the Torres deal, I always felt that we missed out on a opportunity.
Godin however, imo, is the better CB these days. David Luiz has not improved since joining, so given the choice I would have gone through Godin. In fact, I would rather have Matic now than Luiz.
Diego Godin is and has been for the last number of years one of the best CBs around. I'd still love for Chelsea to buy him.
52m would have been an absolute bargain considering todays prices
Aguero didn't want to leave in 2011, made that pretty clear. So non-starter.
2012 different story, desire to leave was evident and widespread.
Had he wanted to leave in 2011, no doubt Atletico would have accepted the bid.
Summer 2011 he wanted to leave I meant, not 2012.
cmf you've confused us even more.
Good article
I can remember us being very close to signing Pato and Neymar
Centre backs havent been too big a problem for chelsea in my opinion, but the difference between Aguero and Torres would have probablt been huge. I expect you would have sacked maybe one or two less managers, and won a couple more trophies. Aguero is a brilliant player, great attitude, versatile, quick, skillful and scores goals. Torrres is virtually none of those. 52 Mill for aguero alone would have been worth it for chelsea.
Torres was once very quick, skillful and could score goals on a regular basis...
Yup, last seen about 6 - 12 months before Chelsea bought him.
defenders were definitely a big issue at the time we needed a 1st choice not a backup
So why has luiz spent so much time in midfield? Cahill I suppose..
He hasn't spent so much time in midfield he played a few games there last season when Rafa was the manager because we had a lack of options
