Maybe we look more balance bcos Soldado isn't playing....

The formation hasn't really changed much... other than Lennon for AT

Yes Captain but we didn't and that's a concern. Had we then our problems would be over but I fear some more sweat ahead.

We've played with wingers on both wings, and that's allowed more width and less congestion in the middle, leaving it more open for through balls, and better for crosses to come in. Not to mention we've had 2 games against weaker teams near the bottom who we're expected to create a number of chances against anyway.

That's unlikely Captain with our defence which is still quite good. Yes, Defoe hit the woodwork twice and dragged a good chance wide but what use is that? We still only scored one against the rock bottom club.

Chicken was looking for Defoe to play, well he should have had 3 today!

He was castigating Soldado, will he do the same to Defoe, who is as he says a PL proven goal scorer????

Chadli is still an inverted winger... So the only real change as I mentioned is Lennon for AT...

In addition, that was only JD's 3 PL start of the season, Soldado has played many games against weak opposition, away from home (where we are strong) and hasn't delivered. So I don't think the 2nd argument holds water either.

Nevertheless we all want to see Soldaboy do well. We spent a lot on him. But ATM JD looks the hungrier and more dangerous of the 2

Soldado's time will come

Defoe has demonstrated today why he has never scored more than 20 goals in a league season. I like him but he is not a great striker.

For all the stick Soldado has had for not scoring enough open goals, he still has one where Defoe has none, in about 12 games.

Cheers for the thread Hengy

We'd have all felt better if Defoe had scored three today but I felt against Man U we should have won and the chances created and the way we played that we'll be alright, I just wish that the goals would come sooner rather than later but come they will. Arsenal have Chelsea, City and Newcastle coming up so please Spurs, start scoring.

Nothing will turn around their season. They've just lost two on the trot at home and we couldn't beat them at WHL which doesn't say much for either team but they are in an unfamiliar position and I think it will get worse. They should exchange Moyes for Jose.

I'm not getting the inverted winger vibe as much with Chadli, as say Siggy who was there on the left a lot of times Soldado played as a lone striker. And like you say, no more Townsend on the right constantly cutting in.

It's only recently really that AVB has struck up a better balance in our formation, from not just the wings but support behind, making it easier for the striker. We saw signs of it against United in Soldado's last game, and since then Defoe's had that chance, against lesser opponents than United.

Soldado should consider himself quite unlucky, but if it was up to me I'd start him against Liverpool.

I honestly think if Soldado had the chances Defoe had today he would of scored atleast 1. I love Defoe but I still think Soldado is the better striker,

Me too Don. Soldado will go on to prove he is a better striker than Defoe eventually, given enough time.

posted on 7/12/13

I'm happy with either starting but I didn't like the situation where AVB had only Soldado starting PL games, leaving Defoe on the sidelines, even though Soldado was not performing.

Good to see when AVB's neck was on the line he reverted to the tried and trusted, JD

Hope they both get good minutes from here on in, till JD jets off to the arctic cold of Toronto

@friedel_b: Great week for us. 3 wins and a draw since Man City. People still questioning our team spirit? Didn't think so!!!

Team spirit was never in doubt, just team selection.

Greaves,

You're right, Defoe could have had 3 today - had it not been for the woodwork. But how refreshing is it to see our striker make chances, put himself in a position to get a chance & give us fans the excitement that we might be able to score?

Defoe has been like a breath of fresh air & it's no coincidence that we have scored 4 goals in the last 2 games with him in the team.

However, unlike you I am consistent in my opinions & admit he does need to find the net.

Careful though Greaves, you are becoming on par with sandy with your bitter replies & picking holes for the sake of it.

Defoe has looked twice the player Soldado has & he deserves to stay in the team.

Get over it

soldado will fire next season, like giroud has

Chronic,

Why even think about next season? Hopefully Defoe will be on fire next season too.

Let's stop the favouritism with Johnny Foreigner.

Defoe is the better all round striker. Simples.
