It's not the amount of ground covered it's how it's covered. The more possession a team has the more the players in that team move around at their own pace and thus they set a tempo.
Whereas the opposition players will be more stop start quick sprints etc trying to close down the opposition thus expending more energy but covering similar amounts of ground overall.
There was interesting comment made by one of the football pundits. He said Everton will at times during the game deliberately slow the pace down by playing the ball around at the back to allow the front men to re energise/get their breathe back and then they start pressing forward again.
Which when you look at our games is true and it must be so frustrating for the opposition when we do that
Nah, was just an example that supports your point.
It's mentally tiring to be chasing the ball against a team dominating possession, even if you're not running a great deal more or at all.
Today was also a good example. Before they scored I thought Everton were starting to look a little leggy as Arsenal were seeing more of the ball.
But once they scored you took the initiative, got the equaliser and started enjoying more possession and looked as if you'd find extra energy in your legs.
Was the same against us when you scored as well. Gotta give real credit to Martinez instilling that mentality in the players. It's something we've been so good at.
We had no response against you as you were looking to put the game to bed once you scored. As a United fan it was unforgivable to see that response to going a goal down at home.
I still stick with the psychological aspect of it.....
The distance ran or how its ran is no problem for professional athletes.
We just dont run oit of gas after 70 mins anymore
