Nicely summed up

Probably doesn't still get the credit he deserves.

Maybe because he was an average fighter who beat old men way past their best.

Nice guy though.

It's true that he didn't really fight anybody. But in his peak all the other heavyweights were dead beats. Not his fault. And as the saying goes. You still have to beat what's infront of you.

Archie Moore, Ezzard Charles and Jersey Joe Walcott and of course Joe Louis.

Not many heavyweight boxers have names of that stature on their record, certainly not the like of the Klitschkos or Tyson.

Jersey Walcott and Joe Louis were very late in the day though. Neither in their prime.

Still better than Tyson

D4 as stated, those boxers were way past it. Rocky was like the k bros. Existed in a time of poor heavys

What a ridiculous thing to say! Even ali in his prime admitted he didnt no if he would of been able to keep the brockton blockbuster at bay! Whenever there is a dominant heavyweight in the division everyone always assumes everyone else in the division must be bums!
Its only when you get the changing of the guard do we say that they had a decent opponent (or past it), loius to marciano, ali to holmes, tyson to lewis etc, all the following were followed by periods of so called bums because the guys taking over dominated! Theres only one period in history, the 70s where there were a hand full of guys who had it between them, but again the other 95 percent of the time they were fighting 'bums'! No one ever talks about that, they just remember there fights! Its not rockys fault he was a different class to his era, as louis was tyson, holmes and klitchs, but would you say they were all average?

I'd pick Hopkins to beat him. Tyson would take him out of there within a minute. Roy Jones junior would box rings round him.

Thoroughly decent chap though.

Marciano, was a true great, he beat some ATG fighter. Huge power for a bloke his size, great determination and chin.

He beat better fighters than Tyson, Jones, Hopkins.

Rock beat archie moore who was also beaten by a welterweight a few years earlier. Moore was in his 40s when rocky beat him.

Ezzard Charles was more than washed when Rocky. He was ancient and lost the majority of his fights after Ricky beat him.

Walcott lost 3 of his previous 5 fights prior to losing to Rocky.

Joe Louis was fighting to pay his taxes and fought like he'd seen the bill.

Nah. Rocky was shlt.

Nice bloke though.

You cant compare fighters from different decands really, different sizes back then, different awereness to health and fitness and all that! All we can say is if them guys put up by mandingo had been fighting in the 50s with smaller gloves in 15 round fights, with the same social disadvantages, rocky would of just been warming into the fight when these guys were close to dropping dead! I think thats fairer than bringing rocky into todays mix because of his size difference and the training methods the fighters of today benifit from, also the bigger gloves and shorter fights (rockey would probably call todays title fights 'spars' And before you come back with 'rocky would of been blown away by tyson etc' consider this, you dont get bigger hitters than archie moore and jersey joe in the history of boxing, and thats an excepted fact, and add to that small gloves..... against all this he went down once in 49 fights I believe and still won!

oh and he was a lovely guy aswell!

On a level playing field, in a neutral decade, Marciano, the best chin in heavyweight history, the bravest heavyweight in heavyweight history, the fittest heavyweight in heavywieght history but certainly not the most skilled! I dont think it would of mattered who he had of fought past or present, skilled or slugger, over 15 rounds he would of eventually worn them down and broke there heart, he always found a way to win and history backs me up!

He got decked by a light heavy with the ref holding Moore back giving rocky time to recover.

He was devoid of skill. I could name over 100 boxers whi would beat him with something to spare.

Nice bloke though

I get it now, your an ali fan! Well this has always been an ongoing debate, so we aint going to sort it out!
I think people get confused between ali being the best for boxing (agreed) and the best boxer! For me he wasnt the best boxer, it was what he did for boxing that was great!
Marciano didnt get famous through his religion, through standing up to the goverment, by slagging down all his opponents (never done before) or his rhymes and cathphrases, he did not get famous from his good looks or changing his name, neither did he get famous for his antics inside and outside the ring, he got famous then still is now for one thing, boxing, thats the difference! He didnt need the rest to be called great!

Ali thought Rocky was a great fighter, and he was considered better than Ali in Ali's time when he was in his prime.

dont be silly! Ali was good, but he had no chin, marciano would of walked him down and crushed his spirt!

Even your hero talks sense unlike you!

Ali was always very generous and spoke well of other boxers after the event.

He also said that the computer which predicted that rocky would beat him was prigeammed in alabama. Make of that what you will.

If you even dream that rocky hit harder than foreman or shavers, you better wake up and apologise.

Rocky hits harder than Cooper.

So? He was still a skill free zone.

Look its no contest, you cant argue with an undeafeted champion who beat everyone around, say what you like about rocky, he never lost, ali lost 5 times! Its not how you beat them that matters its that you did! We can speculate how rocky could of been beat but the facts remain no one ever did, theres a blue print to beat ali! Marciano has the best record of any heavyweight champion ever so therefore he is the best, you can only be the best in your own era with hard facts not speculation! Even ali himself said that marciano was definitely better than frazier and he was rated 2nd best in ali's era so whats tell you!
Problem is you like many others believe the hype with ali but ill tell you this, if ali didnt have all the other stuff going on outside the ring he would of gone down in history as just another top fighter and wouldnt be having this argument, its what he did for boxing that elevated him higher! As for this greatest tab that he is labeled with, that was his own creation, self proclaimed nickname like all fighters have, like marciano was the brockston blockbuster, ali was the greatest, its just people today actually believe he was now because of this!

Ali goty flattened by 'r henry' ffs then had his corner split his glove so he had time to recover, not to talk about the forman rumours! So dont talk to us about chins and cheating!
