The main difference with city is the wide players come in and overload the flanks. United's is more of a 4411

City's works due to having Fernandinho and Toure in the centre of their midfield. Yesterday we had Dembele and Siggy, not exactly a physical presence.

Nothing wrong with our formation apart fem Dembele being the defensive mid and Siggs being the creator.

Dumb if you ask me....

we still continue to put square pegs in round holes..Sherwood is the same.

It was a Cup game so I'll allow him one mess up

There’s no right or wrong system in my book… 442, 443, 451, 4321….doesn’t matter. As long as the players are organised and know what they’re doing…drop deep when they don’t have the ball, stuff the midfield when defending, attack the space and width when attacking…etc

Don't City play more of a 4-2-2-2? With 2 DMs and 2 AMs, the width coming from the full backs?

Personally I really like the idea of that kind of set up, even if it is just an elaborate alteration of 4-4-2

My only problem with us playing 442 is that it doesn't really suit Eriksen. He is a very talented player who needs game time and plays best as a no.10.

However, we didn't play a strict 442 yesterday, and teams like united and city that play two strikers with Rooney and rvp and aguero and negredo don't play 442 either. Each has one player dropping off into the hole. We saw ade get back quite a lot yesterday, coming back for the ball but also running about and stretching west ham.

Thats always been the case tho. Think of Yorke and Cole, its not like the 2 of them just stood up top?

city play 4-4-2..... and have a poor away record, despite how good their players are.

pretty much says it all.

the formation should be used at home against inferior sides only

never away from home unless late in a game and chasing a lead.

Like I said In previous threads. I think a diamond 4-4-2 would be absolute perfect for this spurs side. Sandro as defensive midfielder, Eriksen as creative, 2 wingers Towsend on left and Lamela right... 2 upfront Soldado and Adebayor. I wanted this formation from the start.

We haven't got the squad to play 442 regularly, especially with Andros out.

Bales, this spurs squad is fantastic... No doubt we have. If one of our strikers were to get injured we could always use Lamela as a support striker as such. We have loads of options to go 2 upfront.

Don

It's a talented squad but we've only got Townsend and Lennon as wingers, we've got no width.

Would like to see Lamela as a second striker

The only successful teams who play two up have a second striker of genuine quality [Aguero, Tevez, Rooney], which we do not possess. It also leaves no room for Eriksen and Lamela to play in their favoured positions. Personally, I think the integration of these two players could be key to a potential resurgence in the second half of the season.

I`m all for having two up front, providing one of them is not Defoe.

The bottom line is whether Spurs play one up front or two up front, the defence is still shiiiiiiite.
