Phillips is one of those where I don't particularly mind either way. What he's good for, as you say, is to come for 20 or so minutes and grab a goal that earns a team some points - and we do seem to struggle with grabbing /meaningful/ late goals. If he's content to do this then he could be a very good signing.
I think we're shorter on the wing - be thankful that Dyer and Knockaert have been playing well because they don't have any backup. But Phillips could be the answer to a problem which has occurred in a few matches this season (not all by any means, but some), and a problem which may pop up more as the season goes on and gets more competitive.
I won't be heartbroken if it doesn't go through though.
Yes, I agree with both of you. I think a spare winger is the gaping hole in our squad, but this is like a no lose signing. He could have no impact at all, but if he managed to convert even a couple of games from a draw to a win his contribution could prove invaluable.
The French dude is coming in as cover for Knocky and Dyer (can play on both wings apparently).
That leaves a spot for one player who, when we're 1 goal down or level with 10 to go, will come on and take us to glory.
Phillips could be the man to do thy job, and if he doesn't, he's still a good pro to have around the likes of Schlupp/Knocky/Vardy.
So why not, but I do want the French winger (I will learn his name if he signs I promise) more.
Riyad Mahrez – no idea how you say that in a French accent (is the z silent?). Sounds promising though, skillful, lots of assists and scores goals too.
As for KP at the KP, I think Joby's right, it's a no lose.
He seems to have been around for so long, that even his zimmer must have metal fatigue by now. But it worked for Blackpool (and to a lesser extent Palace) – how many points did he win them with late goals?
A fit 40 seems to be no impediment these days – look at Giggs – and US cyclist Chris Horner won the gruelling 3 week Vuelta a España last summer at nearly 42.
Worth a shot.
There's no point not signing him. He'll score a few goals and will be a boost to the team late in games. Should also help Vardy, Schlupp etc with their finishing. Our opponents will be more concerned with Phillips coming on than a lot of other players in this league.
Get him in, sign a winger and have a goalkeeper up our sleave just in case a late bid for Schmeichel comes in. That'd do for me
We should sign him, great experience at this level, will bring on our younger strikers and hardly misses an opportunity to score. The most natural finisher this division has seen for a long time in my opinion
This or any other division, for my money.
The real decision will be how much are we prepared to pay in wages!
Free transfer yes but 3k a week knowing he only plays 30 or 25 min a game...NO THANKS.
1k a week for 30 or 25 min a game still seems a bit steep to me.
So how much would YOU pay??
I'd put him on a pay as you play contract, I reckon Phillips isn't bothered about money at this stage - its the last half of his final season before retirement, he just wants to play.
Would be a honour to have Kevin Phillips play his last ever game of professional football in a Leicester shirt
Agree absolutely, TOTF. He's a bit of a legend I reckon.
I think he'll want more than £1k a week hairy!
Not sure he'd want to line up with Koncheski earning £25k a week if we were only giving him £1k! I'm reckon players like Phil Gee were earning more than £1k a week 20 years ago!
For someone of Phillips' ability, I don't think you can reasonably expect to pay less than £3k/week.
£4.50 an hour. Double time at weekends.
Minimum wage plus £200,000 per goal.
^
That arrangement is similar to the F1 Lotus team's with Kimi Raikkonen last season – fairly standard wages (for F1), plus €50,000 per World Championship point scored.
It ended up seeming quite expensive, since he scored 183 points. But those points helped them to 4th place in the constructors championship and the €70+ million reward attached to that – so not bad value.
If a bonus for five or six goals helped secure promotion for us it would, on the face of it, be money well spent.
Not sure how it would sit with the likes of Nugent, Vardy and anyone else who's been knocking them in all season though.
Maybe the point by Vulpes is the most apposite. Whilst it would be great to have KP come on to give us that extra boost in the last 20 minutes, what message does this send to Nuge, Wood et al.? I'm sure it would rankle with them - but maybe this could also have its benefits - the 'I'll show you' effect.
I think I'd rather keep going as we are though than risk rocking the boat too much.
I don't think you can use the fact that certain players might be put out as a reason not to strengthen. If Phillips came, he wouldn't even play 20 minutes of every game, I wouldn't bring him on if we were winning as we'd be better off playing attackers who have better all-round games. But if we're not winning then there are times when we could do with a genuine finisher who knows where the net is.
Besides, it's actually players like Schlupp, GTF and Waghorn who should arguably be more worried about this signing as the likes of Nugent will still get around three quarters of the match to get us in the lead.
Waggy in particular, his days are surely numbered
Schlupp's second roll (although stronger) at LB will keep him in and around the squad
GTF will be a bit of the opposite to KP and help see out games. But will most probably move down the order once wood is fit
For me it should be: Vardy, Nugent, Wood starting games
GTF coming on if we’re winning games or as a tactical alternative.
Phillips (if we sign him) to come on when we’re chasing games
Schlupp retained as a squad player, but someone should tell him to concentrate on developing as a left back. If he cannot accept this and wants to be used as a striker, then he should be sent elsewhere.
Waghorn to be used only when we specifically want someone to lose possession, run around energetically with no particular purpose and hit the ball very hard with random accuracy. Someone should tell him he’s not a footballer. If he cannot accept this and wants to be used as a striker, then he should be shot!

I agree with both of these. I fear he's not up to the standard required as a striker, but can still learn his trade as an attacking left back and become very effective there. He has a lot to learn of course, but this could be a fruitful future for him if he wants to commit to it.
It seems im in the minority but i dont get this signing. Hes past it and i honestly dont see why he should come on infront of Schlupp or Waggy.
CDUBYA Kevin Phillips is a goal scorer thats the massive difference between him and Waggy and Schlupp. forget the pecking order if can get goals and come on in pressure games which in turn gets us promoted why not. Look at the difference GTF has made why can't KP @the KP make a bigger impression.
Looks like the new winger is on the ferry from Le Harve
Phillips didnt play for Palace last season really let alone this. Before that i believe he was released by Blackpool. I know he was a good player but I honestly would back Schlupp and Waggy ahead of him if we go into the last game of the season needing a win.
Now the winger i do like the look of...
Sign in if you want to comment
So.....Kevin Phillips?
