"Did she kill herself? There is speculation that the mother of this albino dolphin trapped by Japanese fishermen in a cove has committed suicide after being torn apart from her baby"
How on earth does a dolphin commit suicide? One guy goes it dived under and never came up. What a load of bull.
Animals are animals. If you let that dolphin mother go it wouldn't give a toss. It would just stumble on and eat tuna. Dear God.

Tbf, dolphins, a little less than orcas and elephants, have very strong social structures (almost "culture" like) and are highly sentient, intelligent creatures, so seperation of individuals from the group DOES cause extreme distress. They're not dumb crocs or snakes. Still don't know about suicide though.
Yeah, I think the sustainability is the biggest problem. Because pigs/cows/chickens etc are eaten in most of the Western world they're pretty well bred and farmed so there's no danger of their numbers ever getting low. With dolphins/whales that isn't the case (and any dolphin farm would cost a hell of a lot to run in any case), so when you start using what are essentially industrial-scale fishing methods on a species where you're not doing anything to ensure that the number of animals will replenish itself, it's a problem - no matter how numerous they are to begin with, if the rate of fishing exceeds the rate of breeding at some point they'll be in trouble. There is a lot of hypocrisy around the ethics and stuff, but underneath there's a serious point.
Bit late but...
Firstly, ignore this if you're religious, I'm tired of the same old response.
My main gripe with a fair few comments I have seen is the term 'unnecessary' killing of animals
It's a fact that we don't need to eat animals to survive anymore. Fact. Therefore, the slaughter of trillions of animals annually is nothing more than unnecessary. Meat eaters don't like hearing it cos they bash the harm of animals for entertainment purposes ie hunting, fighting, etc. without considering that the reason they eat the flesh of these creatures is for entertainment purposes - the taste.
Btw, it you eat animals and aren't hypocritical in you beliefs then fair enough. Just bugs me that the majority of meat eaters have double standards when it comes to this sort of thing
What has that to do with religion?
Cos the religious argument is always the whole 'god made animals for human purpose...'
That is possibly the dumbest comment you've ever made on here Analog. And that's some feat.
This has nothing to do with religion you pleb. Stop looking for excuses in trying to bash it.
If you kill animals for no reason whatsoever, then you're a bad guy. Simple.
Look here you absolute handi.
If one's not going to eat the animal, use its fur, etc, and merely kills the animal for reason then they're sick. Don't see how religion came into it.
Did you actually read my original comment you illiterate buffoon?
Eating their flesh and using their exterior for clothing is in no way a sufficient reason for animal slaughter. This is where we disagree. There are many alternatives to each and so there is no need to kill them
If I feel cold I have every right in skinning your people (apes).
I know it hurts. But that's just how things are.

If I might be so bold and speak for pretty much all of the animal kingdom, if you're going to eat our flesh or "use our exterior for clothing", please have the decency to kill us first. Thanks.

What animal you reppin then? Red-billed Hornbills? Your inquisitive and busybody nature reminds me of Zazu from Lion King.
Double standards dubbed
You call me an ape, I respond by providing data which shows that Somalia has the lowest GDP per head.
And I'm the racist one?
HenrysCat, sorry I don't really get the joke
"What animal you reppin then?"
does that mean what animal am I representing? If so, then I think my comment was clear - almost all of them.
And I don't know who Zazu is, but I'm going to assume it's a compliment - it has to be - so thanks!

That's okay - I get a lot of that.
Not sure I really belong 'round here. Not sure I belong anywhere. Still, it amuses me and gets me through the day.
You referred to my people as apes.
By linking that photo, I referred to your people as poor but don't unnecessarily play the racism card
