A championship team won't tempt players of this quality

There's nothing in Spain about this Dunc, so I'm calling crap on it.

Athletico would probably be Mata's preferred option (if its true)

why? Do people suddenly think United has turned into Accrington Stanley or something?

Are you saying It hasn't?

United are a shadow of their former selves.

Moyes to stay

Well we do need another full back and possibly another striker. The quest is however are they good enough for utd

I'd prefer Mata I think, although caveats would change this.

Eg, if we were to get Luis and Costa would that mean getting rid of Buttner and phasing Evra out over next season and also selling Hernandez and priming Costa over the next few years when RVP declines? Sounds like a plan providing we buy a winger and CM in the summer.

No but Athletico are joint top of La Liga, have a really good chance of splitting the big 2 and could be the dark horses in the CL. Also, Mata would do really well there and thats important in a WC year. Would he do as well in a struggling United team?

Shining spark in a 'struggling united ', lift the team spirit and push on for top four? This is the same mata that got 30 secs in the last major championships for spain

Why would A.Madrid offer us first option on Diego Costa just so we move away from Mata. They could sign Mata even with us in the frame. They are a big, big club on the up, obviously we are a bigger club, however the draw of Spain may be enough to lure Mata.

does not add up
athletico could always go to chelsea directly and offer chelsea first option on one of the best stikers in europe atm.

Instead the offer utd the first option and a player just to drop their interest, I call bs.

I would say the signing of Mata would lift the club and the team like Ozil did at Arsenal, we could also build our team around him which would bring many benefits too.

Also worth noting Mata was a Real Madrid youth player, he could possibly not prefer Atletico for loyalty reasons.

tbf op also said he does not believe it

but following ops chain of thought who would u rather have costa and luiz/mata

it depends on if we lose rooney

if we do = mata
if we don't = mata
okay i lied

Mata won't be getting many minutes in the Spain team if he signed for Bayern or Barca/Madrid or joined United. Makes no difference.

They simply have better players than him. Iniesta, Fabregas, Silva etc.

He'd be a huge hit at United though. We don't have a midfielder capable of the through balls he plays. Kagawa we thought could be that man but he's not done enough for me.

Atletico try to sign a Chelsea player by offering Man Utd first option on their star player

Most stupid thing I have ever heard.

posted on 22/1/14

Costa is probably the third best attacking player in Spain at the minute, he's an animal. Cant see Atletico letting him go so easily.

okay, this is not to knock mata btw. But mata plays his best football as a number 10 and would have to displace rooney to get that spot.

So what will happen is we would end up moving him to the left. Where he will still be very good but not his worldclass.

Has anyone thought we might be pushing Rooney up to a number 9 position?

I'm not sure Atletico have the money for Mata AND Courtois who they're gonna need to stump up a lot of money for.

I’m not sure on the finer intricacies of ownership and contracts but if Diego Costa has a £32 million pound realise clause and that is met surely he’ll then have his pick of any club that activates that clause? It would also seem odd as just United dropping out wouldn’t be any guarantee of giving them a clear path to Mata as they’ll be no shortage of interest. Finally with Costa no doubt on a Chelsea shortlist of possible strikers why would the clubs not simply negotiate directly with one another?

What a ridiculous story.

I think that is the best solution until RVP is back fit and firing.

Rooney and RVP will love playing ahead of Mata, that's for sure.
