I really want him to do well for us and he shows signs of being class but he's been verging on crap for us.

I thought he was coming into his own in the second-half but then Moyes replaced him with Valencia 'sigh'.

i think he lacks a bit of something to be a real success here

he gets into great positions but in this league you need to either have

a) pace
b) strength

he lacks both imo, hes a terrific player ive watched him for years at Dortmund and i was happy when he signed but im not so sure he can cut it here

Crap is what Valencia does on the pitch. He has admitted that he needs to bulk up though which is good sign of things to come. His intelligence just highlights the poor state of our team. If he was playing in any of the current top 4 teams, he would be tearing teams apart.

But sometimes players just aren't a good fit at some clubs.

Sadly it's looking that way for Kagawa. I'm a big fan of his, and he has a lot of talent, but I think his time at United can only be described as average.

I know there are mitigating circumstance for this, however, after a year and a half you'd have thought he'd be showing a lot more than he has so far.

And the Mata signing doesn't help him, in my opinion.

The same way some managers are just poor fits at some clubs. We went from OK to terrible the moment Shinji went off. Valencia for Kagawa is one of the many mysteries of Bebe Moyes.

The only positive thing about Mata signing is that he could be around much longer than Moyes. Won't be surprised with Moyes taking off Mata for Valencia in another similar scenario.

Why is that, Dave?

It may help him improve while playing on the left if he has a player that can hopefully link up with him quite well, however, it really doesn't help his cause to play in his favoured role because Rooney and Mata will be ahead of him in the pecking order, in my opinion.

It is clear that our wingers are not working, surely there can a system to accommodate them all.

Well some want him to play in midfield anyway, I dont see that happening and I dont see no reason why both players cannot be in the same starting 11 with Januzaj and Rooney/RVP up top, Mata hasnt be that bad on the right of a 3 when I have seen him for Chelsea either..

Ive watched u guys abit this seaosn and to be honest im not very impressed with him.

Some players are just no meant for this league no matter how hard they try.

Kagawa was rubbish under Fergie and is again Rubbish under Moyes. Maybe its time to cut ur losses and send him bk to Dortmund.

A trio of AM doesn't mean there have to be wingers. Mata doesn't play the #10 role for Spain. He plays wider but not as a traditional winger.

posted on 23/1/14

But that's kinda my point, he's not played in the middle and hasn't looked that good as a result. If he continues to play there I don't see him excelling at United, especially if Mata plays on the right, because that would still mean he's essentially linking up on the same side of the pitch with the same players with who he doesn't have that much chemistry.

Dichinero, there may be, but thus far both Moyes and Fergie have both failed to find a system that accommodates him, RVP and Rooney.

Dichenero, to be honest I don't think where Mata plays for Spain has any relevance to how well he'd play for United.

====================

respctfully disagree completely, bar the strikers i dont think one player is gonna benefit from this more if moyes changes the formation to accodate both. kagawa will finally have a player with his level of inteligance on the pitch with him. This could be the start of something rather beautiul.

Swap him for Gundogan, any chance of that happening Darren do you reckon?

My point was that he is also comfortable out wide.

posted on 23/1/14

Stretty, but that's only likely to happen if Mata plays in Rooney's position, and even then he'll still not excel to the level he's capable of because he'll be playing wide and not playing under Klopp.

That's why I don't think the signing will help him. Plus it's more likely that Mata will play at Kagawa's expense rather than with him.

posted on 23/1/14

True but I don't see how that helps Kagawa. Kagawa isn't likely to play in the middle at Mata's expense because Mata is much better than him in every position on the pitch.

posted on 23/1/14

Even if he plays as an inside left in a narrower formation closer to the centre, i think hell thrive.

This signing doesnt solve half our problems but i think our attack is gonna be very juicy.

Good article

Kagawa is at his weakest when up against a FB on the left with no one around 20yards to pass to. unfortunately for him, he found himself there time and time again. he needs players around him to move to spaces or provide an outlet for a short pass

I don't agree with "he cant handle the physicality of PL" nonsense. Bundesliga is as physical as PL. Its more similar to PL than La liaga and Serie A imo. The problem he has at united is he had to play in a different style with players who are not intelligent as the ones he played with in BL.

Kagawa linked up well with Januzaj whenever they are played together and Kagawa played centrally. He thrives in playing with players with intelligent movement. Signing Mata should help him imo. If we pick front four out of Rooney, Rvp, Mata, Kagawa and Januzaj till the end of the season, we may have a chance of top four. Keep playing Valencia and we wont get top six

Hopefully, Stretty.

Sorry, Dave, missed your comment.

It could happen. Rob made a good point about his wages, though. He must be earning so much more here than he was there before, can Dortmund afford it? And if they can, will they want to pay it when only last summer they brought in their record signing to play in that exact same position?

posted on 23/1/14

since either Rooney or RVP seems to be injured all the time, playing Januzaj, Mata and Kagawa behind a striker is the best option we got

posted on 23/1/14

In theory, it could actually be a blessing in disguise if RVP keeps getting injured and Kagawa on the left starts to work.

I just have my reservations, however.

There's more to it that just one played coming in and Kagawa's form transforming. Japan and Dortmund play a very different style of football to us.
