Joby i was a full home and away supporter during that time and the football was all about winning and it was great to win but not playing the footbal of Bloomfield etc. The difference now is we are winning by playing one touch football not by playing a back five and three in midfield soaking up pressure and using our better fitness to overcome.

My final point did MoNs team ever win 9 games in a row?

Brian Littles side won 8 in a row, so would you say his side were better than MONs as well??

I'm not undermining the fantastic and unique achievement that this team has made in winning 9 in a row for a minute. I believe it's a record!

I guess on that basis that this is our greatest team of all time.

Surprised no one mentioned the third musketeer in midfield - Robbie Savage!!

Where is the appreciation for IAN ORMONDRYOD!? God you lot are so fickle, he was a bigger legend than Keith Weller

BlackStarr, the beanpole was certainly bigger than Keith Weller – well, taller anyway. TB, I think Joby was bigging up Sav earlier up the thread.

My main memory of that first season in the prem under MON, was that nobody gave us a prayer of staying up, absolutely none of the mainstream journalists or TV pundits. Even when we were doing ok partway through the season, there was still a feeling in the media that it was all somehow a fluke.

Was that the best City side ever? In the modern era maybe, but Bloomfield and Gillies' sides certainly bear comparison. The current side has a way to go to emulate the achievements of any of those, but it's certainly got potential.

BlackStarr, I think you mean he was a 'taller' legend than Keith Weller

Bludde hell, I post nothing for ages and when I do I'm beaten to my point by Vulpes by 49 seconds

I remember him scoring a goal, I think in a play off semi final, which he shinned if I remember rightly, and he couldn't believe he had scored.

He ran over to the leicester fans shaking his head

Nev, you're quite right, MON didn't win 9 on the trot. And when this current side do manage to win 9 on the trot in the Prem where MON managed for the majority of his City career, then we can all doff our caps and say Stick that up your flute and smoke it, O'Neill.

There can be no comparison between the MON team who won 2 cups and achieved 4 top ten Premiership finishes and the current team -yet!

Current team have great potential but they need to get over the finishing line.

Sorry, Nev – no cigar this time.

If you are going to ignore the tier of football in which teams had to compete to chalk up their achievements, then you'll end up arguing that the 2008-09 side was more than twice as good as the 96-97 team – even though the former accumulated its 96 points against such giants as Hereford and Cheltenham in League 1 while the latter finished 9th in the Premiership with 47 points and, er, won the League Cup.

Much though I like what they are doing, whenever I try to visualise the current team reaching three League Cup finals in four seasons, all I see is the Spinning Beach Ball of Death.

FF you know me well enough to know what i am doing but it does not matter what level there are only two teams Celtic and Madrid who have won more games on the spin.
But this team has done nothing till it gets promoted but tell me that we are not playing better football now than you have ever seen hwether its because no one tackles or the pitch is beeter than the baseball ground.
I love watching first touch football and are delivering it in spade loads

I see what you're saying Nev, some of the football we're playing now is phenomenal to watch.

I think this team is more technically gifted than MON's and largely has the potential to be better but right now player for player and what we achieved, MON's all the way, for now at least.

what a strange article to write. Hey ho, maybe you can look at the present..

It filled a gap in proceedings, I suppose.

Slack.
This is the place for strange articles deluded thoughts and Bull*hit.
We could be on the edge of a new era that with a young talented squad and management team. The funding of owners that could conversely create a team to eclipse MoN achievements and our last period of success.
Whats more than living in the present than that.
Anyway its quite on here its got people talking isn't that what we are here for?

Nev

Great provocative article – got us all engaged didn't it? The sort of subject everyone will have an opinion about.

How many articles on here usually get 40+ replies?

"Didn’t we sign Julian Watts at about the same time as Spencer Prior?"

No, Watts was signed at the same time as Muzzy (loan) IIRC. He was in the 1996 play off final, so he was part of the promotion team.

What about the ice kings of 63?

Well nev, you sparked a debate. Good work

Yes, I know just what you're doing, Nev – and well done for provoking so much response. But equally, it's our job to disagree with you if we think you're mistaken – that's what keeps the debate going.

In which spirit, I don't know where you got that "there are only two teams Celtic and Madrid who have won more games on the spin" idea from, but I'm sure that loads of clubs have won more than nine on the bounce, and I believe that the English league record is 14 (split four ways). It would be brilliant if we could match or beat that, but I have to say the odds are at least 10-to-1 against.

It may interest you to know, though, that several other records are more realistically within our grasp. Because we have got where we are with very few draws among the victories and defeats, our current wins-per-game average (0.724) puts us on schedule for 33 wins from the season. This is a more impressive figure than it may look. Unless I've got my figures wrong, the Football League records are…

The most wins in a second flight season since the formation of the Premier League (ie a Division 1 or Championship season) is 31
The most wins in a second flight season in any era is 32
The most wins in any English league season is 33 (Division 3 North)

As I say, we could beat the first two of those and equal the third just by maintaining our current win average. That would be nice, wouldn't it?

FF you are right and i even disagree with me and of course nothing is resolved till Dung delivers his pronouncement. The stats where posted on twitter for consecutive wins someone more adept than me might have the link.

FF we are experienced city fans so we are thinking we will get gubbed on saturday the old fashioned city way!

Good point Nev....sorry I was hammered when I wrote it.

I pronounce that this team must achieve success of several top 10 finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup win before it can be considered "better" than Martin O'Neill's.

More entertaining, maybe.

*the success

My pronouncements must improve in the future.

Exactly, Nev. It's not the matches against high-flying sides that worry me. I can see us getting points against Ipswich and even at the City Ground. No, it's the fixtures against clubs in the bottom half of the table that I get nervous about. In the event that we 'turn up' and do the biz against Watford, I will immediately shove a few quid on us losing by at least two goals at home to relegation-bound Charlton.
