Seems to be it's more of a commentator thing, than a tactical invention.
There have always been players who've taken that role, guys like gazza, figo, zidane from the top of my head.
With the increase of focus on tactics, it just seems a good way of letting viewers understand what commentators mean. Between the lines of 442 or whatever.
