i dunno i played with a couple of brilliant footballers at school they played for chelsea and never made it (in this country anyway) read alot of autobiographies as well (david batty's is the best IMO) and non of them really shed any light. my mates dad took them both to a tournment run in the summer and thats were chelsea spotted them if i remeber correctly

First thing you have to know is you can be thrown in the best academy in the country and it still doesn't mean you have a career in football. You'd expect anybody in the Prem Top 4 academies to at least make it to League Two level. Some of those kids won't even make it to Blue Square Bet. Some kids have potential but potential can be very misleading. Most kids that can control a ball get scouted these days because you can't really tell at that age, so if they seem to know what they're doing then they try and nurture that.

Interesting article, my little fella was recently scouted and has been ivited onto a development course, and guess what? It's with my beloved Leeds united!
However he's only 6 so I'm not really expecting anything to come of it at this stage. The course starts 6th September at Thorpe arch, anyone else out there have a little un attending it?

I used to work with Mick, he's from Donny. Been scouting for Leeds for years.

What do the scouts look for at a young age?

If its Leeds, then parents with cash.

.....................................................

Depends what age, but I presume we are talking juniors ie U14s and below.

In that case they are looking for
1. a kid with natural ability
2. someone who listens/learns from the coaching to demonstrate improvement

The football development programmes are there to promote/teach technical skills. A lot of ball work.

Took my granson to Thorpe Arch and they picked him against Derby away unfortunately he lived at the time in Naples and after the game had to go home so that was the end of that but believe me you have to devote many hours running them for training playing away matches and true to Batesd you get nothing for your troubles!
