Not many left from our "tried and tested failures" that have first team places now.
Only ones I can think of are Gerrard and Cole if he gets the nod ahead of Baines. Wouldn't include Milner and Carrick in that bracket.
And Walcott is injured, Dunc (I think).

though he was gonna be back.
there may be a suprise, someone like maybe zaha or ince if their loan spells go well.
If we're picking based on form, Adam Lallana has to be there and I'd much rather see Jay Rodriguez than Welbeck.
The only older players that I would take would be, Gerrard, Baines, Johnson (if he can find his form again), Hart (I know he isn't that old, but has been around long enough), Carrick and Defoe (he has never not done it for England)
I really think that we should use this opportunity to play players like Sterling, Oxlade Chamberlin, Shaw, Jones (as a CB), Henderson, Flanagan, Berkley, Berahino, Powell (who has been doing amazingly at Wigan), Ward-Prowse, Redmond and Chalobah. They will only gain valuable experiences from it that will hopefully enable us to have a better crack at the Euros next time around.
I don't think that's fair on the likes of Gerrard and Cole whose this will be their last shot of getting to at least the semis of the WC, but long term, experimenting with youths for the future would be a great idea, just look at Germany

If Townsend or Cleverley go I'm going to go mad.
Anyone for Rodriguez over Welbeck?
Rodriguez is 5th top scorer in the PL btw. Can play wide too.

Good team but I'm a sucker for players who play regularly for their clubs.
Swap Milner for Hendo/Carrick depending on how running the team has to do and Jagielka for Lescott.
Walker or Johnson is tricky, screw it let's take Flanagan...
We have some very exciting players to take. Someone mentioned Sterling, Januzaj and Barkley and I totally agree, all are very fine young players.
I think our best chance lies in hitting teams on the break at pace so we need a player who can sit in front of the back four and spray some passes, anyone got any ideas? <smile>
As much as a hate the man, Hodgson could do worse that bring back John Terry as one of the old heads to coin a phrase. His partnership with Cahill is very good.
you take your best XI regardless of age.
if a squad or fringe player has been around for a while and not been up to much then leave them home for a younger player
Got to be the best squad possible.
