World Class Brits

None of the above are world class in my view.

But 'world class' is a subjective term.

Personally, I think there are less than 100 world class players in the world, more or less.

This'll be a short article, English world class players??

i agree, none of the above are world class, in the past 10 years id say england have had a few world class players at their peak in their respective positions

Scholes
Rooney
Gerrard
Lampard
Ferdinand
Campbell

So by world class you would say it is defined but the worlds elite, your Messi's, Ronaldos etc?

I see world class as a player who can single handedly control and win his team a game on a consistent basis, as you said subjective, but an interesting thought nonetheless.

For me out the ones I mentioned - albeit loosely, Baines has to be considered world class, he would get in to most teams in the world and not look out of place.

The only world class brit is Bale

Yeh, I'd go along with that.

Rooney is a tough one. He's a Premier League player - one of the best.

But, despite looking like he would become an International player in his early days, he looks less and less a player suited to the international game these days.

Maybe that's harsh.

Baines?

I think talk of Baines as world class is utterly crazy.

Isn't football funny for opinions!

Rooney lacks the consistency but on his day you cant argue with the world class label - It seems my definition is a bit more relaxed than some of you guys.

It definitely is - I'm a scouser so suggesting Baines is not thorough some rose tinted specs either

100% TRUE.

Only English youngster which is genuinely world class is Ox. Well maybe not in everyone's eyes yet, but he is as good as anyone in Premier league.

Rooney I would say a few years back but even on top form Rooney no longer world class.

I could only think of Scholes, Gerrard, Lampard and Rooney in the last 10 years

I guess you're going on ability? I mean, if you go on achievements alone, so many (very good) players will in fact be regarded as nobodies.

Also, many gauge such things on a players ability to make a decisive impact on the International stage. Is that fair?

You could quite feasibly form an argument that Wayne Rooney is no way near World Class, IF you were to use that as some sort of basis of judgement...

Interesting question and one that there's probably no right or wrong answer to.

I will flip it then, on the continent players such as Isco - are they world class?

If so why not Sturridge or Wilshere (the one with the good touch not this seasons one :P )

posted on 14/3/14

World class are players that would generally get into any team because they are close to being the best in the world in their positions.
NO english players are world class, not even Rooney.

Cole has to be regarded as a world class player.

I think that's a good point.

Often, we only see players from Spain, Germany etc. in the Champions League and when they're being talked up by pundits and journalists.

I think it's easy to have a high opinion of players like that, and I think it distorts things.

I agree that players like Sturridge would be raved about if all we saw was highlights!

Well then I would use stats to prove the following point:

Goal scorers - judged on goals, Sturridge has been up there with the best, why is he then not world class?

well i would say, you cant just judge a player on stats, i think at this moment in time there are fewer genuinely world class players than there have ever been, particularly in the striking department, i would class Ibrahimovic, Suarez, Aguero and Lewandowski(and he's arguable tbh) as the only world class CF's around atm

I'm pleased Sturridge is doing well, but world class ?

sorry can't see that, lets hope he has the quality to get England out of the group stages.

I wouldn't say Sturridge has been doing what he's doing long enough yet to be world class, and we haven't seen him do it against enough world class opposition either.
