Mignolet is a very good goalkeeper, but not a goalkeeper I'd expect to play for a team pushing for the title yet. Certainly he's not a patch on watch Bruce Grobbelar was in any case. I'd say he just doesn't want the standards to be lower than they were when he was there. Which is fair imo. Currently I'd put Mignolet behind De Gea, Lloris, Hart + Cech. On par with Tim Howard and better than Szczęsny right now out of the top 7 sides. I do think he'll improve though if you stick with him and be just as good as Reina was.
Well Bruce should know about winning things in spite of your keeper.
Personally I think it's a bit harsh. There is no doubt the Mignolet has improvements to make but he's an excellent shot stopper and in one on one situations. His kicking and attacking crosses needs to improve but he is young enough to improve in these areas.
The article on the BBC was a good one. I have onpeseen him play ywice this year and wasn't blown away by him, could he get better....well I am no GK coach. But agree wiyh some of old grobs views (does he have a book out?)
For once I agree with something Brucie said! Great shot stopper, not so good all round. With the right coaching he could improve. Sadly we have John Achterberg as his coach who was a crap keeper and the fact Reina has had a great season under his old coach, does suggest that Achterberg is a crap coach too.

Success?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes. 7th to either 1st or 2nd (most likely) is a success.
He is one blooper away from going on a downward spiral but he has been decent enough.
As soon as the media get on his back he will crumble
I'm not convinced just yet. There's certain areas of his game that need improving on, which many of us accept.
He's young and it's his first season, he's certainly talented so I'm happy to see him given time.
Brucie though should know more than most about that. He struggled quite a bit when he first joined, made quite a few howlers and needed time to assert himself.
Eventually he did although he had remarkable reflexes to call-on from the get-go, to bail him out at times.
He hasn't been a revelation for me personally but he's definitely talented.
To add that penalty save against Stoke back on day one when taken in isolation, was an important moment in our season you feel.

If Mig doesn't save the penalty at Stoke, we don't challenge for the league IMO. We'd have been deflated with just a point and losing a goal late on, we may not have gone in to beat Villa. United game would have been in balanced, but it's because of that save that we moved forward.

Mig has been a 6.5 out of 10. I actually think he has started to improve at the right time and we have seen him come out for more crosses as per earlier when he was rooted to the spot.

He's not the best keeper we've had but he's decent and has saved us more points then he's cost us this season.
The Stoke pen sticks out but even v city last weekend he pulls off an outstanding save towards the end of the first half to get us in a\t 2-0 at half time.
He also seems like a good lad abut he needs to be more commanding of his area and the back 4, hopefully that will come with more time.
Migs had some dodgy moments and one notable dip in form, but equally he's pulled off some saves at critical times of the season. Bruce is probably right he can improve and luckily that is what Brendan has been good at doing this season.
Like god fowler I'm surprised Achterberg is still about he must have something about him, though to remain through all the change the clubs been through.
I've got to say I agree with Bruce. I don't know a great deal about keepers in terms of starting positions, when to get set and so on but to be fair if you listed the top 7 teams goal keepers he'd not be at the top.
I don't think him saving shots, as a goal keeper, should excuse him from criticism and I would have rather had Begovic myself. He seems a nice lad though, just a bit timid, and he is young.
Hopefully he'll kick on but if I'm being harsh I'd far rather have Lloris, Begovic, De Gea, Cech, Chesney and even Howard. We have let in a lot of goals..
Letting in a lot of goals is the wayRodgers sets up to play.
Similar to the old Newcastle under Keegan (but withthe ability to keep ball)

I think a lot of Mig's hesitancy is due to not knowing his defence.
For example, with Skrts and Sakho, they can be relied on to attack and win the ball. On the occasions where Kolo or Agger play however, and that isn't really the case.
Add to that playing a chunk of the season with full backs who had no confidence in their own ability, and I think its unfair to blame Mignolet for the amount of goals conceded.
Especially when people say Schezney and Lloris are better keepers, despite the amount of gubbings theyve taken this year.

Mignolet has been good. His shot stopping is up there with the best. He has made a few mistakes, with mistakes being overstated by many but overall he has been one of the best keepers in the league. You wouldn't expect a new keeper not to make a few mistakes and I feel it is more to do with nerves and a fear of messing up, having joined a massive club, rather than his ability. This can be rectified with time.
He's certainly been a massive upgrade on the Reina we had for the past three seasons.
He'll get better too.

Dont be so silly, he sets up from the limited games I have seen to attack. Now you are going to conceed more that way
I wouldn't mind upgrading him if the money is there. It's not a crucial place to strengthen in our team, but I think there are better alternatives out there
Lloris is apparently looking for a way out of spurs, maybe we jump in there? Arguably the best keeper in the league & will want to be playing in the CL
Keep Mignolet. He seems to be good at the morale thing and has made good saves this season.
