I have a better and easier solution.
1 Sack Moyes.
2. Appoint a top proven manager.
3. Enjoy watching MUFC again.
Buttner not able to play offside, Jones' handball, not Moyes fault.
SE85, I actually think the OP's suggestions are more realistic.
Moyes is our biggest problem
The squad you list is well capable of a top 4 place if they tried
IF we win our game in hand, we are 10 points off 4th. So in 3/4 games we have come up short. It isn't much when you think of it. If we were 4th would it make that much difference.
If we were 4th would it make that much difference.

thats what Sunderland fans say too.
We need a proper manager to assess this squad. We have seen these players perform consistently at the highest level.
You do not get rid of them because the manager cannot get the best out of them
The problem is Moyes. This guy could spend £200m on new players and we could be asking for a clear out after that. If we had had a manager like Klopp, I doubt many fans would want a massive clear out. We need to clear out Moyes and his crew.
Have Young, Nani, Anderson, Valencia or Buttner ever performed consistently at the highest level for anyone?
I am not sure Klopp is the one, no proven record of success, or history of reams of trophies either.
He won the bundesliga twice and got to the final of the champions league with a dortmund team built on a low budget

Have Sakho, Coutinho, Henderson, Glen Johnson, Allen ever performed consistently at the highest level for anyone? Yet the manager has managed to squeeze out performance s from them.
Winning the league in a 2 team division isn't as impressive as it sounds. The German league is quite weak, certainly compared to the Premier League. Villas Boas won the Bwin with Porto, they don't all work!
Coutinho is a good player, far better than any others mentioned. Hemderson was being scouted by Fergie when at Sunderland, so he always had talent, although I doubt anyone saw him becoming the fulcrum of a title winning team, that is true. But in short, no they haven't performed consistently, only this season. Young, Nani, Anderson, Buttner have all been sh*** even under Fergie.Valencia turns up occasionally, when the moon aligns with Mars!
I think we need to make a big statement with Rooney, either get rid of him altogether or get a big name striker in so that he has to work for his place. What's the point of a striker who is rarely up front?
I think we need one big name striker, two central midfield players, maybe two wingers and a whole new defence. We really are in trouble.

Yes they have for Manchester United. Where have you been?
Young - yes he has, not consistently but he has
Anderson - of course he has
Nani - integral member of our title winning side
Valencia - player of the year twice for us
Buttner - Bayern Munich
A question for you. When has Moyes performed at the highest level for anybody?
Huge clear outs like this simply won't happen. Some of the players listed are completely fine as squad players. We just need to up the quality with two top defenders and two top midfielders. Break the bank for these four.
Of course I'd rather do it with another manager but that's a different story.

When I said I was not convinced Rooney could lead the line in a 4-2-3-1, for some of the reasons you have stated, i was called a Rooney hater.
He lacks the discipline, finishing and ability on the ball to lead the line in that formation.
There were a couple of passes Kagawa made to him, to feet and his touch destroyed the opportunities.
It is not his best position
Players will leave this summer of their own accord. We know who.
We dont need to 'clear out' of any of those who stay as they are all valuable members of the squad, which is currently well capable of getting in the top 4 with a modicum of direction and organisation.
We need to buy a quality CH LB and CM, thats all, to push for the title.
But most of all, we need to invest in a Top Draw manager and coaching set-up, to take on the best in Europe and win.
