That's not good news to hear. Best wishes.

Best wishes Leighton, speedy recovery. A friend of mine suffered a stroke in January 2013, can be soul destroying.

Absolutely gets my best wishes too. Was it him who was so short sighted he could hardly see the ball coming?

My sister (DerbyBird), former regular poster on 606, suffered a very serious a couple of years ago. She still goes to games (ST holder at the front of the South Stand), but has to spend much of her time in a wheelchair.

My father-in-law had one two Christmases ago; I picked him up from Heathrow this morning and he's in better nick than I am, although those that know me will recognise that that's not saying much.

It doesn't always mean permanent disability and can be managed if you're fortunate to receive help quickly; let's hope that is the case for Leighton.

Yes, it's a case of how soon they get the brain drugs in.

Best wishes Taffy from a Claret old enough to watch your whole career. I am sure he will be getting the best possible treatment and hopefully a full recovery will follow

It is very possible to make a complete recovery from a stroke without any treatment at all. It depends on the area of brain which has been deprived of its blood supply and whether the loss of circulation to that part is complete or partial. What we think of as a stroke is when a large artery to a very important part of the brain has been completely blocked by a blood clot, or less commonly by an area of bleeding. When OOE talks of "brain drugs" these are drugs which dissolve the blood clot, which can have dramatic effects, but which carry the risk of making the stroke worse by causing bleeding in the affected area of the brain.

It's a difficult area for medicine because treatment is required quickly to be effective, within around three hours from the onset of symptoms, and because the margins of benefit vs risk are relatively small. Public awareness campaigns unfortunately tend to lead to a lot of people phoning for ambulances because of some sort of dizzy spell rather than an actual stroke, while the patient who would be most likely to benefit may be lying on his or her bedroom floor unable to do anything.

Optimistically the description of James' event describe it as minor so there are good grounds for hope that he will have no disability at all. Having a relatively minor event can be beneficial if it allows preventative treatment for the future, so let's hope for that. Andrew Marr has made a pretty good recovery from his episode.

I remember sitting in the Ley Stand to watch Leighton James play for us for the first time in a friendly. He was a hugely exciting signing who sadly didn't really live up to his big price tag for us. Let's hope he is soon back doing his current work.

Talking of former players. I had my haircut yesterday and sitting in the chair next to me was a player who was one of my favourites as a young lad....and i didnt realise it was him till he got up and walked out!!! Gerry Daly.

I suffered a T.I.A.
commonly called a mini stroke 5 years ago.
Lost all feeling on my left side for periods of 2\3 minutes.
Hospital diagnosed it .
Stop smoking.
I did so still alive....Hate smoking now...

posted on 23/4/14

Have you kept your Alan Biley mullet, Backo..?

I stopped smoking in September, Siam, and now abhor the smell, getting angry at the people who stand in doorways of public places filling the place with their filthy smoke. I still hanker for a ciggy from time-to-time though

Rams reject Ferrie Bodde is also poorly bad, innit; coma, and that.

Yeah Harps was telling me how cool golf was. You took up systema yet vidal?

posted on 23/4/14

If I said it was on my list of things to do, I would be lying. Harper's lucky in that respect - I expect I would have snapped him like a twig.

Get well Leighton . Remember you well.

I believe Gerry Daly is a golfer at Kedlestston Park, although he spends most of every day propping the bar up!

His wife is a solicitor who funds his 'lifestyle'.
