But if we won our next two games, and Chelsea lost to Liverpool, they'd need 3 points in their final game to secure third. We should play the first team in case they slip up, because the difference between 3rd and 4th is massive.

Wanting everton to win when it has no impact on your club whatsoever
^ how does that affect my support for Liverpool?
As a man utd fan we can still finish 5th if everton lose today and we still need everton to lose final 2 games which is possible and tottenham to lose 1 game and man utd win final 4 games=5th spot for man utd on goal difference hopefully and if arsenal finish on 79 points I won't mind missing out on top 4 due to unusual season.
Why care about how any other teams play if they don't impact your own team?
As an Arsenal fan today I don't care about the Fulham result or the Doncaster rovers result or Man utds result. The only result I'm interested in is Evertons. Couldn't give 2 shíts if Liverpool lost 3-0 or if they smash Chelsea 12-0

Competition is what spurs a team onward to better things. If you have crap competition / rivalry you get complacent.
