From what I understand Robb can you only stream stuff from things like iplayer, etc?. I've heard you can't stream things like .avi or .MKV?
I have a dedicated media pc with XBMC and a skygo app so I just use that. Don't need a Chromecast but it does look nifty.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
This was my understanding too.
Not a bad little gizmo for 30 quid.
If you haven't got a smart TV, it will allow you to watch your netflix youtube etc on your TV.
Worth noting initially if using a tablet, you need to have your laptop or desktop on, as the Tablet seems to be just a gateway, remote, between your desktop, and your TV.
Although I'm sure there's an app either already out, or about to be released to allow you to play media straight from your tablet, ie, film downloads, to your TV.
Flex app is a must have to go along with your Chromecast dongle, costs about £2.50.
I believe google have opened up their gadget to app developers, so its usefulness will grow day by day.

Through your phone or an iPad you can only stream iPlayer, youtube or Netflix (unless you can find hacks).
But on the Laptop you can stream/mirror anything that is on your Chrome browser. Literally anything.

How do you go about mirroring with chromecast robb ?
Download Cast Store from playstore, all the available apps and gizmos are there.
It will stream avi files btw

You get the Chromecast extension (which takes like 2 seconds from the Chrome store for free) and then a little symbol appears permanently in the top right hand section of the Chrome browser.
Anytime you wanna mirror whats on your browser you click on that and it instantly appears on your TV, with sound (some HDMI to TV cable connections don't have sound so Chromecast wins!)
Piece of p!$$.
Nice one robb.
i have one two, we lost the free channels off sky (BBC ITV etc) a couple of months ago, so web TV is the only solution. Film On plus a Chromecast, perfect solution. Works with XHamster on Chrome too, just saying !
It's just a hdmi cable, only wireless. It takes about 10 seconds from sitting up plugging it in name sitting down then continuing with my day.
I'll pass, it's a good gimmick though.

A few months back there was this app called Cartoon HD which basically streams the latest Hollywood movies in HD for free.
Thanks to Chromecast I can now stream these movies onto my TV in HD quality.
-------------
It's not on App Store anymore but you can still get it.

Just purchased.. Cheers All&ROBB for info
Enjoy and let us know how you get on with it.
its so much more than an hdmi cable. you can set it playing something and it connects directly not via your pc, you can turn your computer off and it will carry on playing.
i like the way with you tube you can rack up tunes like an old juke box, and anyone on your wifi can add a song from their own device. i could see pubs or bars having this.
downloaded the cartoon hd app to my phone, how do you stream to the chromecast ?

Download avia from play store. When you select a movie or whatever from cartoons HD, is gives you an option to either play, download or custom. Choose custom and select avia as your player. Hey presto.
