Jason McAteer

The ex-Liverpool and Republic of Ireland midfielder was dubbed ‘Trigger’ during his career for his similarity to the numbskull character in Only Fools and Horses. We almost have enough material on McAteer to pen a book about his stupidity.

McAteer was once asked at a take-away if he wanted his pizza cut into eight slices or four. “Four,” he answered. “I’m not that hungry.”

On Soccer AM some years back Neil Ruddock regaled a story about Trigger while he was having a pint in a pub in Dublin after an international match. Jimmy White walked into the pub and was greeted by McAteer. “Oi Jimmy. . . one hundred and eighty!” McAteer shouted.

On another occasion, McAteer locked himself out of his Porsche. His mate told him to get a coat-hanger so he could pick the lock and he came back with a wooden one.

Trigger once applied for a credit card and on the application form there was a question: What is your position at the company? McAteer’s self-confirmed answer was: “Right full-back.”

He’s also on record as saying:

We seem to be a side that if we don’t score we get beat.
