What mind games are these then?
...................................................................................................
Those that lead people to be content with a top 4 place!
----------------------------------------------------------------------

So the only clubs that can be happy with their season are the ones that win something?

Makes you wonder why all the lower league clubs bother really doesn't it? And why they have fans that turn up week after week.

I've got a bit of news for you Lambsy, most people enjoy watching their team win games and play well. Trophies are fantastic when they come along but they aren't the reason people watch their teams.

Others can try and devalue it as much as you like, I'm happy that we competed for the title. As I said in my first post on this - schadenfreude is never more applicable than in football.

A bit of common sense

we laugh at arsenal as they do not progress. if our manager did not progress the team in three years time then it is time to move to another. but at arsenal they seem to be happy with just finishing top four every year. they had a fantastic chance this year but didnt buy a striker even at xmas time.

as for us our ambition was top four at the start of the season and we done it. it is funny we cant win, if we say going for top four people say is that it etc etc yet of we said we going for the title people call us deluded.

2009 2nd with 86 points, more than this year. Wouldn't start counting those 'we're back' chickens just yet.

No, but if there was a 'Taking The Title To The Last Day' trophy United would have a few more to polish, even Newcastle would have one!

No, that's called ambition, and when you miss out that's called disappointment.

I just don't get why so many want to replace ambition and disappointment with realism and contentment!

I don't think we are. Well, I'm certainly not.

However, 2nd and 86 points is a hell of a lot better than 7th and 61 points or 8th and 52 points!

We had an opportunity to invest in the team in 2009 and we sold Xabi Alonso and replaced him with Aquilani! Not exactly what was called for.

We have that same opportunity now. Hopefully we make a better job of it this time around. I'm hopeful simply because we don't have Hick & Gillett!

Its ironic that the OP and fellow Liverpool fans are happy with 2nd and calling it a fantastic season, yet at the same time laughing at Arsenal for finishing 4th again.

Obviously finishing 2nd is better than finishing 4th but you dont get a trophy for finishing 2nd

Liverpool have done well this season, there's no doubt about it, but at the same time the lack of European football (& getting knocked out of the domestic cups relatively early) played a huge part.

Next season will be much tougher, with Champs lge and everyone giving Liverpool much more respect, expect a lot more teams to park the bus against you. And we'll see just how good a manger BR is.

It should be very interesting, good luck

Firstly that isn't ironic.

Secondly, what are you talking about? We're made up because we're back in the CL after a few years out. We're also made up because we finished JUST behind and in front of mega-bucks clubs with a small, young and exciting squad.

Lets not turn this into an Arsenal vs Liverpool article:

But anyone that looks at Arsenal and cannot see the progress they've made needs to get their eyes checked.
Yes, Arsene is a stubborn manager, who should spend just a lil bit more. But we've built a new stadium, dont have a sugar daddy, sold key players to rivals to balance the books and managed to remain in the Top 4,whilst living within our means, what is Liverpool's excuse for dropping out?!?!

Like i mentioned earlier Liverpool have done well this season, but Liverpool fans laughing at Arsenals season makes no sense

Especially if Arsenal win the FA cup.

I'm going to have a stab in the dark here and suggest you don't understand it because for the vast majority of your adult life (assuming you are an adult) Utd have been winning things.

Whether you choose to acknowledge it or not, supporting Utd over the past 15-20 years is not the typical experience of a football fan. You've been spoilt by success, as we were in the 70s/80s.

I guess the question is; if being a Utd fan over the past 20 years in not typical for a football fan, why would you find it so surprisingly that other fans don't necessarily see things in the same way?

I agree we've been spoilt, but I also remember the 70s/80s when I was disappointed to finish second, seeing a big lead squandered and knowing it could be many years before we had such a chance again.

I was disappointed because my ambition was to see United win the league after a 20 plus year gap.

You think we're not disappointed?!

Well I can put you right on that one straight away, there is enormous disappointment for all fans.

However, the majority can also see the progress made from the past 4 years of finishing 7th, 8th, 5th, 7th.

It's not just happiness or disappointment! There are shades of grey here.

i think the feeling ive got for liverpool right now is more along the lines of excitement rather than disappointment.
For the first time in my life time i cant wait for the next liverpool game, not because of the result, but because i like watching our football.
Thats the biggest difference between now and other years i think.

We don't exist to be popular amongst anyone but ourselves. If our fans are happy then who cares about the others?
