Neuer is obviously very talented and could probably play in midfield but is prone to a howler, as are most keepers.
Probably not a favourite on the Arsenal board but Begovic is as good as anyone in our League.
Overall Buffon is still class.
Neuer is the obvious choice I reckon Ter-Stegen could overtake him in a few season though.
I think Neuer is lucky he's relatively good on the ball. He definitely seems to 'dither' on the ball when it's played back to him. Quite often seen him get almost caught out.
Buffon has been immense since he started playing as a teenager for Parma. A Hell of an achievement. Suffered a bit with injuries as he enters the late Autumn and Winter of his career, but in terms of consistency over the years, it's hard to argue he's probably been one of (if not) the best.
Buffon, Khan (who, despite me being a young age, always looked an absolute beast!) and Schmeichel were the top quality keepers I grew up with.
The game has changed immensely since then, people like those mentioned above tended to be really big built (or perhaps gave the illusion of being so?)
Now you have the likes of Scez and De Gea who are undoubtedly top quality keepers, but they're tiny in comparison.
Never looked quite the impenetrable monster he was prior to having his skull smashed by a Reading onslaught.
---
I don't really think that was such a factor tbh. If anything I'd say footballers in general ought to read a bit more.

The modern breed of keeper tends to be a lot more wirey and tall, don't they.

Oh, I see what you did there, that was like a joke, but a bit smaller.
I think todays keepers are as they have always been in regards to build.
Some tall and gangly, some shorter but big built.
I mentioned Begovic earlier, i stood next to him a few
weeks ago at a local park with his young daughter.
He's a monster.
The oldies still have it for me: Buffon and Cech.
Neurs, Courtois and DDG's of this world are talented but are still to match the aforementioned duo.

If true, that might be down to changes in the game itself. Height and span will always be an advantage for a keeper, but nowadays there isn't as much emphasis on the aerial game as in yesteryear and keepers might even be a bit more protected, so they don't need to be so strongly built. Lighter-framed keepers tend to be more agile, so they'd have an edge in the aspects of the game that require these attributes.
