I wound up with

----------------Zoff
Cafu -- Baresi -- Beckenbaur -- Alberto

------Charlton -- Zizou ---- Xavi

--------Pele -- Maradona -- Cruyff

-----------------------Yashin---------------------
Cafu---Beckebauer----Moore---Alberto
----------------------Matthaus-------------------
----------------Zidane---Cryuff---------------
Maradona----------Pele-----------Eusebio

Honourable mention to Garrincha.

I'm annoyed that Bergkamp didn't feature in either the Guardian's top 100 or the BBC's top 110.

I had Garrincha in changed him for Cruyff

Why would he have?

Well for a start he's considered one of the best ever Dutch players alongside scoring one of the finest goals ever in a world cup tournament. He was also considered one of his country's top performers and in general was a top world cup performer throughout his career.

I based mine only on players I have physically seen play and not based on youtube clips from bygone eras or the hype of my father and old men:

Buffon
Cafu Cannavaro Maldini R Carlos
Figo Zidane Dunga C.Ronaldo
Baggio Ronaldo

My team is only from players from World Cups that I have seen, and that actually made the short list, which wasn't that many.

------------------Buffon-----------------------
Lahm----Thuram----Cannavaro---R.Carlos
---Iniesta----Xavi-----Zidane----Rivaldo---
-------------Ronaldo----Klose----------------

Not a terribly balanced midfield but it will do.

Whilst he's the best player in the world at the moment, I don't think Cristiano Ronaldo should be on this list - what's he done at a World Cup except score in a rout against Kim Jong il's lot and wink at Rooney's red card..?

Matthaus is probably the best player to use in a deeper position. A box-to-box player who could even work as a sweeper. He could whack 'em in too.

Surprised more people haven't included Paolo Rossi. He almost singlehandedly won the World Cup for Italy in 82.

I went for:

Zoff
Alberto Moore Beckenbauer Maldini
Zidane Matthaus Garrincha
Pele Maradona Ronaldo (Brazil)

Tough choices, wanted Cruyff and Eusebio for obvious reasons but couldn't leave out any of the 3 forwards.

I think it's more the fact that the other forwards in that list achieved more in more World Cups - I couldn't even put Cruyff in

Banks

Maldini
Beckenbauer
Cafu

Matthaus
Zizou
Gazza
Charlton

Ronaldo (proper one)

I only got 7/10 on the attacking scale. I beg to differ.
