It's already better than the 2010 world cup
France 1998 was magical to me.
2002 because it meant I could start drinking in the morning without people thinking I've got 'issues'
Italia 90
England went from strength to strength - we had the excitement of Gazza, the thrill of Platt's winner and the penalties!
Lineker describes it as the one thing that still turns his stomach when he thinks about it - we were so close to the final.
There were also some fantastic performances to watch - Baggio and Schillaci were brilliant!

Let's be honest, this World Cup merely needed to go ahead in order to be better than 2010
But it has been wonderful - Many people thought it would be a dull, defensive tournament.....i hope they're happy to be wrong
90 as well.
I am liking this World Cup so far, I do think it's partly down to there being too many good defenders about at the moment though.
1990 was crap, full of draws and 1-0s. Really boring tournament, only lit up by Cameroon.
86 or 94 for me. Both full of wonderful football and high scoring matches. Maybe every World Cup should be played in the Americas.
Let's not get carried away just yet. The group stages in 2006 were brilliant but the KOs were still quite poor - apart from a couple (Arg-Mex R16 & Ger-Ita SF).
The WC will ultimately be judged on the KO games but so far, so good.
France 98 was the best WC in recent times. Euro 2000 was the best tournament.

I think it's in danger of being ruined because of the ref decisions. As a former ref at SB level I can appreciate a little of the difficulties that they face, however some of the calls have not only been dubious but can be called as biased as well. Shame really because there has been some top football.
Lol I really liked the 2010 World Cup although this year it's better but 2010 is one of my personal favourites lol

Agreed Lee.
Sorry but Italia 90 was about the worst World Cup in living memory for me.
Just forgetting England's run to the semi-final for a minute, it was largely extremely dour, cynical & resulted in one of the worst finals we've had. It was a relief that Germany got the penalty before extra-time kicked in.
There was a few great goals sure, Baggio, Matthaus & obviously Platt spring to mind but on the whole it lacked excitement.
The two that proceeded it have been the best. This current one has the potential to be a cracker.

The standard of football in 2010 was absolutely dreadful!
2010 was definitely the best with Theo Walcott
86 was the best by far. Maradonna was on another planet.

England's run is precisely why Italia 90 wasn't 'crap'.
Depends how you rate a tournament I guess, but obviously the success of your own country will make a difference to your enjoyment of it.
And, people tend to forget the dull games and remember the highlights.
Remember Cameroon beating Argentina in their first game? Canniga getting wiped out?!
Having Ireland and Scotland there was also good.
Guess it depends what your criteria is, but that tournament holds the fondest memories for me.
