Or, in other words, we need more CBs...
New Utd supremo van Gaal vetoed the deal under that specific proviso, he sees the England hopeful as an integral part of the Man Utd defence.

No, he hasn't. Van Gaal said yesterday that he doesn't want to Ok any deal involving player outs till he has assessed them in training and pre-season.

I believe so, yes. But not just any old Tom, Derk or Harry.
Djourou is a semi liability and young Iggy just looks like a fish up a tree, he'll get cremated at Prem level.
Young, hungry and talented players (defenders) need to be on the menu. Ideally with enough ability to do a job if and when they're called upon, but also have the capacity to learn from the likes of Kos and Merts and (in an ideal world) stake a claim to be a long term heir to either.

I'm reading between the lines and not specifically braking down van Gaal's comments. It was implied by Utd that Smalling is seen as very much part of the longterm plan at Utd.
I know Wenger was initially interested in Smalling. Strangely after a really promising and impressive start to his Old Trafford career, he somehow managed to regress and many see the player not at the level to push on and be a 'top' Premier League defender...
Reckon we will get a 'Squillaci'* and fast track Julio.
*Experienced, been there done that, older CB on the cheap.
wait... we've still got Djourou?
We need to be careful about bringing in too many players at once so for that reason we should just refuse to sell Verm, keep Miquel or Djourou (sure he has been sold though..) as 4th choice and get a CB in Jan if we need to. Verm did ok when he played last season.
I thought Djourou has been sold.

That was the initial plan. Hamburg were to take him on-loan for a season (with an option to buy). Hamburg apparently had agreed in principle to buy Djourou at the end of his loan spell. But changed their minds. The fact that they were God awful in the Bundesliga and avoided relegation by the skin of their balls, thanks to some serious underachieving players, inevitably helped them make their minds up that Djourou wasn't for them.

Hmm Djourou performed very well in the world. Just thinking if he may have another chance at Arsenal.
Djourou was poor at the WC.
Everyone deserves a chance. He's far too erratic for my tastes. Can have a solid game, followed by another game where you question if you're watching the same player. Not ideal at the best of times and certainly not in the centreback position, eh?

Was poor against France. But tbf he was partnered with Senderos. Senderos makes all his partners look bad.
Otherwise he had a pretty good world cup.
Where is the source that Hamburg have reneged on their agreement? All I can find is information suggesting they've agreed a deal and he's now officially a Hamburg player.

He's back on Arsenal's squad roster, for all to see.
I (like everyone) was under the impression thatHamburg were dty bound to sign Djourou at the end of his deal, they haven't/ I'm not sure if it's to do with finances, or the fact that they just don't fancy the player now?
Maybe a deal will go through over the summer. But for NOW, he's definitely an Arsenal player.

Then why does he have a squad number for Arsenal?
Moist has had a real nightmare here.
No idea Either it's a mistake from us or Djourou had a rubbish game and Hamburg didn't go through with it.
Sort of explains why we aren't linked with any center back. Wenger has never been able to get rid of the dead wood and now wants to extend Giroud's contract.
According to the website, alongside Campbell, Djourou is the only player without a sqaud number.
He's not on Hamburg's squad roster either.
Has he been bumped off?
And I think that means Campbell is surely going to be loaned out, or even sold?

No it means the roster has not been finalised. Wenger will do that in pre-season.
