I believe 100% they will step up. Smalling and Jones have been played out of position for far too long and with a good run at CB I think they can be great.

Should've mentioned, that's exactly where is stand, i think we'll go into next season with a couple of top class CBs in Smalling and Jones. Evans I also think will be solid, but I expect the other two to really shine.

Chris Smalling is 24 for christ sake, and you're only just considering removing the 'youngster' label. In all fairness though, all three have been at the club for over more than three years, and I think they have been wrongly handled, and their progress has been halted because of it. In some ways, you could blame Sir Alex for not embedding them correctly.

That's why I'm grateful for having someone like Rodgers, who is great at doing such a thing. The likes of Sterling, Henderson and Flanagan, and future players like Wisdom, Suso and Ibe have come off better for it.

23 is still fairly young for a cb. I'm saying it's gone, and probably was on for too long.

Do people not reply, with logical and intelligent discussion anymore? What the hell, you're a Chelsea fan anyway.

Heard this a 1000 times. They'll partner Evans and rightly so, he's the best out the three.

How long before jones goes hurtling through the air trying to make a challenge only to end up getting injured, we HAVE to sign at least another cb

Smalling is easily the best out of the 3. Evans used to be but has been poor the last 2 seasons.

Really expecting Smalling to push on, I think he will too

Keep throwing those smileys my friend

United will definitely need another CB, maybe even two, if you're playing three at the back for sure.

Only need one CB. Keane/Blackett can easily step in

If Hummels is as great as most people think and the best ball playing CB around and we as Man Utd the self proclaimed biggest club in the world and with according to Ed the ability to pay record transfer fees why haven't we just gone and offered £30m for him. After all we spent that on Rio all those years ago !
Personally I would rather have Benatia

I think after a good run of games at CB all three will show themselves to be very capable however it is a bit much to expect they all become top class CBs in the space of one pre season.

Personally believe we need at least 1 more CB this window. I know we have a couple of youngsters however we need a bit of experience in there. Maybe rio should have been given another year?

They need game time and consistency in position, u can't improve if Ur getting benched every other week or your getting shifted to rb for weeks on end, I couldn't stand fans last year who lambasted smalling or jones when they played rb and would fluff crossing oppurtunies, ĺt would be like asking Carrick to play right wing, if u want a compatant rb sign one!

Smalling and Jones have been stunted by playing out of position. Evans is underrated. Evans has stepped in and played to a high level when either Rio Or Vidic were out. His role now will be different as he is now the most senior CB in the side. Personally, if we play a back three with no new signings then I see Smalling as the central CB with Jones on the right and Evans on the left. I think Smalling compliments both Evans and Jones but the other two seem a mismatch when played as a central pairing. Evans being both footed will suit the LCB as well. If we do sign Hummels then expect one of Jones or Smalling in the right side of the CBs. The other two will be Hummels and Evans.

Jone in the middle of 3 against madrid was good. Smalling and Evans were terrible against liverpool, some of the passing out from the back was embarrassing. Jones in the mid of 3,other 2 blackett and smalling.
