WHY DO WE NOT HAVE DEFENDERS ON THE POSTS

We need a defender around 6'2+ who will win header after header. We've no height at the back whatsoever and are always being out jumped/muscled. Webster would have been ideal

Giuseppe Bellusci is 6ft 1in. Will that do?

We need more than defenders on the posts from corners to sort our defence out.

Start with 2 centre backs and a left back

Hanging baskets?

Firstly they took a short corner with two attackers out on the wing - so you have to send a second defender out to provide cover.

As for whether you put defenders on the post, this topic is mentioned in the 'Secret Footballer' book - where the author says that statistically more goals are prevented by defenders competing for the ball rather than standing on the post.

It would be nice to think this was a specific instruction from Hockaday, but as our defence was a total shambles I doubt it was.

Coaches usually tend to use Zonal marking methods rather than man for man marking but I very much doubt C0-ckaday even knows what zonal marking is.
Simply too advanced for the likes of him.

A defender on the post will pretty much eliminate a threat of conceding a goal in that area anyway. Just the other 3/4 of the goal to aim at at

Middleton - opinions are split on that, even at the highest levels. The key thing is that all the defenders are working to a system where each one knows what his job is which (as the free header at the free kick showed) they didn't.

"A defender on the post will pretty much eliminate a threat of conceding a goal in that area anyway." Sorry, but that's nonsense. You might as well put all your players on the goal line and let the opposition have free headers.

Most teams operate a system with 1 man on the near post and a man who is at the back but not on the post, but is near enough to get there if need be.

We didn't have men free to man the posts there were 7 players marking the penalty spot.

Jonty, that was a cracker, full marks for that comment, it was true, but hilarious.
