That's true, we could sign messi and somehow we would get that one wrong aswell
I am slightly worried about our defence as well, traditionally Spurs aren't solid at the back, we have a defence that has never really been outstanding in recent times, and Poch did ship a lot of goals last season.
That being said, I think your individual analysis's of the players are a bit off. Rose had a stormer at the start of the last season, and an absolute shocker after, so maybe there is a good player there. Walker and Kaboul are both perfectly fine defensively but both appear to have bad injury problems which will be detrimental. Verts was never that great defensively but his attacking qualities made people overlook his poor positioning, that being said he is of top 4 quality. Naughton is perfectly fine, a lazy scapegoat made by myopic fans, he obviously isnt top 4 quality, yet how many teams in the league have a second choice RB that are better than him? Maybe City, Chelsea and Utd for definite, thats about it.

Micah Richards is an Arsenal fan, doubt he'd join you.
Much of the failure of our defence was tactics / strategy / the rest of the team.
We simply were not organised enough. AVB had us pressing high at the back but not pressing the ball quick or hard enough leaving us exposed in behind.
Sherwood was just -clueles. The tactics and team selection were hard to understand and left us exposed at the back.
I think even with the same players our defence will improve simply because there will be a clear, time wide strategy, better shape and organisation, the the whole tea will be drilled...its not just the defenders responsibility.
Overall I think we will be under less pressure at the back because the rest of the team will work harder and better know their roles.
Certainly need to cut out individual errors, with the likes of Rose, Chiriches, Walker, Vertonghen & Kaboul all dropping clangers last season which cost us.
I know it's all negative but I see no positives

Don I can think of one positive. Chiriches wont be playing
