Whats a snudger?

The experts said to reduce the league size. The league size was smaller when we had clubs that were succesful in Europe.

Attendances against the lesser clubs are lower than against the likes of Rangers, Celtic, Hearts etc.

TV companies are also most interested in the bigger games. Smaller the league the more big games.

Both these facts mean less money from a bigger league.

There is no chance of it ever happening. And rightly so.

Hey renegade, how you doing mate. i know this argument, but to me this is why our game is heading south fast. the tv cash is getting poorer all the time.
we need to let our teams develop players for the long term good of the game surely?

If there were 20 teams, then the TV money would be split between 20 teams, and therein lies the problem.
We're already being shafted on our TV deal after the Setanta debacle.
I would personally pay for "SPL TV" and keep the money circulating in the league on it's own.
There are enough fans to make it viable, and it means we're not having to subsidise other mediocre sports which are getting huge revenues for marginal audiences on Sky Sports.
I also don't agree with having to fork out for 2 Sky Sports packs AND ESPN just to have a "chance" of watching SPL games.

We're stuck between 2 tough situations - too many games against each other, or too many meaningless games and less money for it...

Our teams are developing players though.

It's just that with the money down south they are quickly snapped up. In the summer we've seen Goodwillie, Craig Bryson, Chris Maguire and Craig Conway move down to England. 4 of the more exciting players have left the league.

I would rather see a smaller league with 10 teams, as it's my opinion that with less teams the finance would be greater from tv deals. And while everyone says they're bored of seeing the same teams, why is it more people turn up to watch the big sides? We're a small country, we couldn't sustain a big league.

In a smaller leauge I believe clubs would have greater hope of hanging on to their best players, or at the very least commanding a greater fee for them.

Agreed Brooklyn. SPL tv if reasonably priced would seem to be a good plan. I think our big clubs could take a minor tv money hit in the short term, if it meant in the long term a rise in the standard of the league, meaning better cash to come later. Also it would be a huge boost for our smaller clubs

I hear what you're saying renegade, but (in my opinion anyway!) the only reason we're seeing the younger guys breaking through is because at the old firm we're is so much trouble money-wise. I honestly think a bigger league would allow more to come through

I don't understand your point. How does money problems at the Old Firm allow Dundee Utd, Kilmarnock and Aberdeen players breaking through?

We don't need more young players breaking through, we need more quality young players making the break through. There are plenty young players breaking through at the moment, Our national squad is a young one at the moment.

Playing against weaker sides isn't going to help our young players progress.

Playing in a tougher league is the only way our young players will improve further.

We need more managers like Kenny Shiels in the SPL.Managers who want to play football, keep the ball on the deck, play out from the back. It's refreshing to watch a team like Kilmarnock at least try it.They might come unstuck when the pitches turn to shiiit in November (all the more reason to play summer football).

I was only meaning they get a better chance to break through at the old firm. at the other clubs they already come though out of financial necessity.

And i would suggest that having a few more games against "lesser" teams would give the youths a better chance to play and and gain experience

As we are currently seeing, if they are good enough they will play.

We see young players make the break through at the Old Firm if they are good enough.

Your point doesn't make sense. As playing against weaker opposition wouldn't make any difference to Rangers or Celtic, they both would still want to win every game, and play their strongest side.

Young players can be simply loaned out to give them a chance to play and gain experience.

But there is no need for this, as they are currently being given a chance. Looking at Rangers; McMillan, Perry and Wylde played at the weekend. Ness looks like a top young player. While the likes of Hutton and Fleck have also been given a chance.

What more can you ask for?

posted on 22/8/11

I'm sure McMillan and Perry only played due to injuries. Otherwise i think we'd have had more experienced guys played out of position.

I think we'll need do agree to disagree on this renegade, your point of view is clearly opposite to mine. no worries though

2 leagues of 18 with a pyramid set up.Top league entitled to play or even purchase a place in the pyramid set up-no entry to top leagues.
fans allowed to buy 'away TV packages'.

I would agree to disagree if you had points of view to counter that of my own. You don't seem to though?

2 leagues of 18 would be a go-er for me mordor, and these are the kind of tv options we need to be looking at.
And renegade i have been answering your points. if you simply choose to disagree, thats up to you bud, it's a free country! I don't agree with what you're saying as being the only right way forward. Going back to my original point, i firmly believe we are stifling our game in scotland. Look at the european results, over the past few years our game just doesn't match up. We need to look at every way we can to help the clubs all produce talent.

For those that go on about Sky/ESPN money-you are making a rod for your own back. The more successful the EPL becomes with Sky money the cheaper our players become and the EPL players in turn become more expensive.
