I can't see the abuse being religion orientated as the article suggests considering the fact that India have Muslim players and also plenty of Muslims live in India but then again I was not there so not sure what may have been said to Moeen.
Kash - you know full well its not religion orientated.
I have been to quite a few games, and there are alot of Muslims that turn up and support India.
It may well have been due to his Pakistani heritage..but Pakistan fans do not really help themselves either:
The Pakistan fans boo'd Saj Mahmood and called him a Traitor...a while back, why? because he played for England and had a Pakistan Hertitage.
I cannot recall any Pakistan fan booing monty or Ravi the last time we played in England. You always get one or two idiots, but for the majority of Indians to boo him showed the little class they have.
Two possible reasons I can think off;
1) they have pogonophobia
2) they are immature
From an England fan yesterday:
"Well I went to the game yesterday and what I witnessed was terrible and totally unexpected. I have been to many cricket games involving different countries and I've never seen a more poor supporting crowd then the Indians, yesterday was horrific.
I sat in the West Upper stand(supporting England) which was 95% Indian fans and the way they conducted themselves was terrible, especially to Moeen Ali. It all started off at around 2:30 just after the toss. The teams come up on the big screen as they usually do and the presenter said 'Hales' with a few cheers from the crowd, followed by 'Jason Roy' with a lot less cheers. Next was Moeen Ali and as his name was mentioned the crowd erupted with boos and silly chants which I found poor really however I excused it for this time being.
Next was when Mooen came to bat, just as Roy left the crease the crowd once again erupts and on the big screen it shows 'Moeen Ali' as next. In he comes and once again the boos go on. Behind me I could hear some Indian fans saying 'the Pakistani is here' 'look at him' etc. He got out on his second ball and that was probably the loudest cheer of the day. Me and my friend were vocal supporters yesterday for Moeen and England and when Moeen got out the fans behind us were making double the noise they usually would.
Next was when he came onto bowl which was the second over, yes once again he was greeted with boos from the crowd and few words.
The ball seemed to be following Moeen yesterday wherever he went and at one point whilst fielding I heard an Indian shouting out 'Moeen Ali looks like Dictator' and there were other things which were said which weren't very nice and I cannot say them on a public forum like this. I thought it was terrible.
I don't mind whens fans boo the opposition for a reason e.g. Anderson and Jadeja. Those boos are fine because of the reason behind them. Jadeja and Anderson both did something wrong. What has Moeen done wrong? Absolutely nothing. Its simply his Pakistani heritage which is causing all these boos coupled alongside the fact that he spun them out numerous times.
Anyways the best part is that Moeen actually was the one who saved the game from being a draw as he stopped the ball on the boundary so the Indian fans got what they deserve. "
So looking into that I heard "The Pakistani is here"..and he looks like a Dictator (referencing the Film Ali G was in I guess).
So it was because he has Pakistani heritage..
However - There are eejiats in all walks of life that ruin it for the rest.
Do you support the Pakistans fans who boo'd Saj Mahmood..calling him a Traitor???...
Sajid Mahmood enjoyed his best day as an England cricketer on the final day at Headingley, taking 4 for 22 in eight hostile overs to secure a series victory over the land of his forefathers, Pakistan. But his day was marred slightly by the barracking he received down on the boundary's edge, as a posse of Pakistani fans accused him of being a "traitor" and a "reject".
Mahmood, whose father was born in Peshawar and his mother in Rawalpindi, was a Pakistani supporter as a child because that remained his parents' allegiance. But, he as explained, from the age of eight or nine he began watching England on the television and playing the game himself, and from then on it was England all the way.
"It started off a bit light-hearted but then it got a bit personal," he said of the banter during his spell, as local Pakistanis, buoyed by the match situation and the cheap final-day prices, flocked to the ground in numbers that had not been seen on the previous four days. "I didn't really take any of it in, I just concentrated on bowling good areas and pitching the ball up.
"I heard the word 'traitor' in my second spell, and a couple of things like that, but I didn't let it affect me," he added. "I just put it to one side and I thought I bowled pretty well." At one stage, after taking the wicket of Faisal Iqbal, he was seen cupping his hand to his ear, and explained: "They'd been giving me such a lot of chat that I did it to see what they've got to say now."
I think its also a bit of jealousy because Moeen bowled out India a few times in the test series.
If Moeen ali could get more consistent with the ball and cut out less 4 balls. he will be a great assest for England. Needs to work on his batting aswell..
But not bad at all so far,
Thought he was a good number 6..and should have left him there. Plays his shots, and can time the ball well.
Englandwhoelse - I think the India fans are far ore angry with their own team, rather than any England players
Ravi Bopara also got some boo's as well. Like I said it wasn't religious. End of the day many Sikhs have beards too. On TV it didn't sound that bad but I guess on the ground it was a different picture.
These types of events just make people look silly as it did before with Saj Mahmood. Pointless really.
Ponting god booed a lot in England. He deserved though in some incidents. he over did the questioning of umpires. claiming catches that dropped. while refusing to walk when he was clearly caught.. He took gamesemenship to all new level. But even then the booing of Ponting went way over the top on occasion..
Supporters get ritual sometimes and it becames more than a game.
You see it in football when rival fans beat the hell out of each other and its only a game.
Not saying yesterdays booing was on that level. but totally undeeded.
Agree Kash
To be honest, we should actually be proud that these players make it and play for England.
At the ground, there are a few groups..mostly who have had a few beers..who tend to get heard.
Again..it really is up to teh Indian fans to to tell them to shut up.However, alot of them come with family, so just don't want any trouble, and just want to enjoy the cricket,
You can't compare this to saj mahmood.... Completely irrelevant and not the same, although just as wrong. The boos weren't directed at monty. They weren't directed as severely with Ravi either....
The Indians have an obsession with Pakistan and anything slightly related to Pakistanis. Our overall tests and ODI against India is superior and that still hurts... I suppose it doesn't help when Moeen, (a pakistani in their words) is ripping them in tests on top of that!!!
Englandwhoelse - noweher near that level. If you looked at the games on TV..you'd see the fans werent out to cause trouble..and many times seen England and Indian fans celebrating, cheering together.
Half the time I dont think they care that much, they just want to have a day out, a few beers..and have a laugh
I thijnk its best to focus on the sport and respect yer opponent..
Its ok to have banter now and then like
Kohli
pujara
Jadeja
Like I did during the test series.. But that's as far as it should go..
No one likes losing.. But no need to focus on certain players and pick them out for booing and abuse.
I hope Moeen Ali gets treated ok when he plays in India next year or when ever the test/odi series are..
Hope so too..
p.s. the banter..cant argue, those players were poor during the Test series.
Again, it seems the IPL and ODI format is just taking over..and India will lose interest in Test cricket..and I don't think this series done anything to advertise the format.
I really hope they dont.
The public in India are not that narrow minded. Pakistanis always get a good reception in India and vice versa but here in the UK it is more vicious.
You;d would have thought it would be the other way around...i.e Mooen getting boo'd in India and cheered here.
I know for sure this wasent the case back in the 70's and early 80's.
But then again..I dont think they had much choice but to stick together
Indians and Pakistani's feel affection for their homeland whether they're born there or not to some degree. Moeen Ali was booed because of his Pakistani lineage - wrong to an extent yes but it is mostly due to an Indo-Pak rivalary and is hardly something that needs to grab massive headlines. The English fans taking the moral high ground makes me laugh: have a listen to what you hear in a pub on a Saturday afternoon and you'll hear abuse about the same "Pakistanis" playing for England that makes the Indian fans' boos seem like child play. One doesn't make the other right of course but some need to understand the rivalry and passion that many Asian fans have especially concerning Cricket. They were hardly giving him a tough time through a few boos. Mahmood got stick from the Pakistani's a few years ago for being a traitor and that's just how it is.
Many Pakistani fans are quick to condemn the Indian supporters yesterday but they too despite most growing up in this country I assume will have an affection for Pakistan. Let's not kid ourselves you can be born here a million times over, sing God Save The Queen under the national flag and talk in a Cockney accent but the affection for your homeland remains.
The likes of Ali, Bopara and Monty should be commended on the breakthroughs they've made by showcasing their talent they have in the British Asian Cricket community but at the end of the day you can hardly complain when the Indian or Pakistani fans don't want them to do well against their own country team.
I might be wrong but I don't think Monty, Bopara or Hussain have ever been targeted by Pak fans. Saj Mahmood got some stick but it was needless banter.
Targeted
Yesterday was just a few idiots with one drink too many booing because of his Pakistani heritage. The faux outrage here is laughable.
Don't be so ridiculous, if anyone is obsessed with anything, it's you with India.

Think his comments were in reply this one: "The Indians have an obsession with Pakistan and anything slightly related to Pakistanis. Our overall tests and ODI against India is superior and that still hurts."
Comedy gold that is.
Am all for supporting my team/country.. But why do Indian fans go mental when a single is played out to midwicket etc. its like yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeehhh whooooooo a singleeeeeeeeeee yeahhhaaaa
What I find funny is this nonsense that;
It was a "few" Indian fans ....
They had a drink too many... Yeah, I'm
Sure they had too much by the time the teams were announced and also when Mooen came in to the crease after 5 mins of play
Pak fans have never targeted Nasser, Ravi or monty, all are seen as England players, and do not meet the criteria for "India- pak rivalry" nonsense.
Appalling behaviour by the Indian fans, very immature and child-like. I think bumble summed up it on skysports yesterday by saying "these lot need to seriously get out more"
